The short answer
User-generated content (UGC) is created independently by a genuine customer or fan, with no payment or formal arrangement involved. Influencer content is a paid, negotiated partnership with a creator, typically involving specific deliverables and, in most jurisdictions, a required disclosure. Both come from outside the brand itself, but the relationship behind each is fundamentally different.
The tradeoffs run in opposite directions
UGC costs nothing to acquire but offers no control over what gets created or when. A brand can encourage and reshare it, not commission it. Influencer content costs money but comes with real creative control and a guaranteed deliverable, negotiated in advance.
Both carry real, if different, credibility
UGC tends to carry a slightly higher baseline of perceived authenticity, since it was created with no financial incentive. Well-disclosed influencer content can still carry real credibility, especially from a creator whose audience already trusts their opinion. The disclosure itself does not undermine that trust if the recommendation is sincere.
