The short answer
Omnichannel marketing means coordinating a consistent, connected customer experience across every channel a business uses (social media, email, a physical location, a website) rather than treating each one as a separate effort with its own inconsistent messaging.
What separates it from being on multiple channels
Being present on several channels is not the same as being omnichannel. The distinction is whether those channels are coordinated. A customer who sees an offer on social media and then finds a completely different experience at checkout or in-store is experiencing a multi-channel presence, not an omnichannel one.
What this looks like in practice for a small business
A consistent voice and visual identity across social media, email, and a physical location, along with messaging that acknowledges and builds on itself across channels rather than repeating identically or contradicting itself, is a realistic version of omnichannel thinking for most small businesses. Full technical integration across systems is not required to get value from the idea.
