Instagram Reels strategy, explained

Reels are distributed differently than a feed post. They are built to reach people who don’t yet follow you, which changes what makes one work.

Reels are built for reach beyond your existing followers

Unlike a standard feed post, shown mostly to people who already follow an account, Reels are distributed more broadly through a recommendation system aimed at people who have never seen the account before. That difference changes the goal: a Reel has to earn a stranger's attention in the first moment, not just satisfy an existing follower.

The opening moment carries more weight than usual

Because a Reel is often the first thing a viewer has ever seen from an account, the opening second or two does more work than it would in a post shown to an already-familiar audience. A strong hook matters for every format, but it matters even more here, since there is no existing familiarity to fall back on.

Native, in-app editing tends to be favored over a heavily edited import

Content edited within the app, using its own tools, has generally performed better than content produced entirely elsewhere and uploaded with no platform-native editing. That is a pattern, not a hard rule, and it can shift as the platform’s own systems change.
