The short answer
A content brief is a short document that outlines what a specific piece of content needs to accomplish before anyone starts creating it: the goal, the audience, the key point, and any real constraints (format, length, brand guidelines). It exists to prevent the gap between what was intended and what gets produced.
What a basic brief needs to include
A useful brief is short. Most of the value comes from a few fields:
- The specific goal of this piece of content, not just the general topic
- The platform and format it is being made for
- The one key point or takeaway it needs to land
- Any real constraints: brand voice, required disclosures, a deadline
Why it matters more as a team grows
A single person creating their own content rarely needs a formal brief; the intent lives in their own head. Once more than one person is involved, whether an internal teammate or an outside freelancer, a brief is what keeps everyone aligned on what a piece of content is supposed to do before time gets spent producing it.
