X for small business: a getting-started checklist

A working X presence for a small business comes down to a short list of real decisions, not a long list of tactics.

Decide what the account is for

Customer support, industry commentary, and product announcements all look different in practice, and trying to do all three from day one produces an unfocused account. Picking one primary purpose to start makes every other decision simpler: tone, frequency, what to post.

Write like a person, not a press release

Since replies and conversation carry real weight in how far a post travels, an account that only posts polished announcements gives people nothing to respond to. A real opinion, a direct question, or a reply to a customer in the open all read as more worth engaging with than an announcement.

A short starting checklist

Before posting regularly, get these in place:

  • A clear bio stating who the account is and what it is for, in plain language
  • A short list of accounts in your industry worth following and genuinely engaging with, not just broadcasting past
  • A realistic posting cadence you can sustain, rather than an ambitious one you abandon after a month

Run every channel from one calendar.

Every channel you have, included. Adding another does not change the price.
