How to run a social media giveaway the right way

A giveaway with a genuinely relevant prize attracts real prospective customers; a giveaway with a generic prize attracts people who only want the free item.

The prize determines who enters

A generic, broadly desirable prize like cash or an unrelated gadget attracts entries from anyone, most of whom have no interest in the business itself. A prize relevant to what the business offers attracts a smaller but far more qualified pool of people who are more likely to become customers.

Check each platform's current promotion rules before running one

Platforms have their own rules about how giveaways can be run: what entry mechanics are allowed, what disclosures are required. Those rules change. Check the current rules on the platform being used, rather than assuming an older format is still allowed, and a giveaway is far less likely to be removed or the account penalized.

Plan for the follow-up, not just the entry period

A giveaway that ends with no further engagement wastes most of the audience it attracted. Following up with participants, including those who did not win, with relevant content afterward is what converts entrants into a longer-term audience rather than a one-time spike.
