Instagram content pillars: what to actually post about

A small, fixed set of recurring themes makes deciding what to post a much smaller decision than starting from a blank page every time.

What a content pillar is

A content pillar is a recurring theme a business or creator posts about regularly: a category of posts, not a single post. Three or four pillars are usually enough to give an account a recognizable identity without narrowing it so far that there is nothing left to say.

A workable starting set for most small businesses

A reasonable default mix looks something like:

  • Product or work in progress: what you make or do
  • The people behind it, whether a team member, a founder, or a behind-the-scenes moment
  • Genuinely useful tips related to your field, not just about your product
  • Real customer moments, like a result, a review, or a use case

Revisit the pillars occasionally, not every week

A set of pillars should be stable enough to plan around for months, not reconsidered every week. If one pillar consistently underperforms after a real trial, revisit that one. Changing the whole set too often defeats the purpose of having a recognizable identity.
