The short answer

CapCut’s Free plan offers “free templates to start fast” and “basic editing tools”, according to its pricing page; Pro adds premium templates, AI features with monthly credits and 1 TB of storage. Each of the five alternatives below has a free plan or a free version: Kapwing, Descript, Clipchamp, Canva and DaVinci Resolve. They differ most in what a free export looks like and in where the editing happens.

People look for an alternative when they want exports without a watermark, want to edit by editing the transcript, need a desktop editor for longer work, or are tired of saving a video to a phone only to upload it to the app they post from.

PostEase, which publishes this comparison, has its own editor, Studio. It is not on the free plan, and how it compares is set out honestly further down.

CapCut’s plans, in its own words

CapCut lists four plans on its pricing page, which shows prices in your local currency and says they are for reference only. Prices are left out here on purpose: they change too often, and differ by region and billing period, to compare fairly.

Each row is read from the tool’s own pricing or product page, in its own words where quoted, on the date shown. A free plan here means one with no end date, not a trial.

What a free export looks like

A free plan is only as useful as the file it gives you. These are the free exports each page describes in words:

• Kapwing: “Unlimited exports with a watermark”, up to 4 minutes long, at 720p.
• Descript: Local video export at 720p.
• Clipchamp: “Watermark-free video exports” up to 1080p HD; 4K with Microsoft 365 Personal or Family.

What to compare

Before moving your editing, check the things that change the video you post and the time it takes:

• Captions: whether they are written from your speech, and how quickly a misheard word is fixed everywhere.
• Editing by text: whether cutting a sentence from the transcript cuts the video.
• Shapes: whether one edit exports at 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 and 16:9 without rebuilding it.
• Exports: the watermark, resolution and length limits on the plan you would use.
• Where it runs: in a browser, a phone app or a desktop app, and on which systems.
• After export: whether the finished video goes where you post it, or to your camera roll first.
