How to grow on social media: what works on every platform

What grows an account on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Bluesky, the evidence for each, and the habits that work on all of them.

The short answer

The same few things grow an account everywhere: posts people finish, answer, save or share; a steady rate you keep; and posts made for the place they appear. What changes from platform to platform is which signal leads. Watch time leads on YouTube and TikTok, shares and finished Reels on Instagram, replies on X, time spent reading and comments on LinkedIn, saves on Pinterest, and on Bluesky, being in the feeds and Starter Packs people choose.

So grow by picking one or two platforms, learning the signal each one rewards, and posting for it every week. The table below gives each platform’s lead lever and its evidence, word for word from that platform’s full guide.

Every platform in one table

Each row comes from the platform’s complete growth guide on this blog, where every step has its source: YouTube’s and TikTok’s own statements, Meta’s system cards, X’s published ranking code, LinkedIn’s engineering blog, Pinterest’s guides, Bluesky’s announcements, and studies by Buffer, Hootsuite and Sprout Social.

What works on every platform

Across the seven guides, five habits come up every time:

  • Earn the next second. Every platform measures whether people stay: watch time, finishing a video, time spent on a post. Open with the point.
  • Make posts worth acting on. A share, a save, a reply or a comment tells the platform the post was worth more than a glance, and each platform ranks on at least one of them.
  • Keep a steady rate. Buffer’s studies on Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn all found that more posts a week went with more reach per post.
  • Answer people. A reply counted 27 times a like in X’s published code, replying on Threads went with about 42% more engagement in Buffer’s data, and comments are among LinkedIn’s strongest signals.
  • Fit the place. A vertical video for Reels and TikTok, a 2:3 Pin, a wide YouTube thumbnail, a post in a Bluesky community’s own words.

Where the platforms differ

Follower count matters less than it used to. TikTok says follower count is not a direct factor in For You, and X’s published code put about half of For You from accounts people do not follow. On those platforms, each post earns its own reach, so a new account can grow from one good post.

Search changes the timescale. YouTube and Pinterest are searched as much as scrolled, so a video or Pin written in the words people type keeps being found, while a post on X or Threads is mostly read on the day. Bluesky is the outlier: people choose their own feeds, so growth there comes from fitting the communities you want to reach.

Turning it into a weekly routine

Growth comes from doing these things every week, not once. Plan topics by pillar, make a week or two of posts in one sitting, schedule them, answer comments as they arrive, and check each month which posts beat your own usual result. In PostEase, one post goes to every channel you connect, the inbox brings their comments and messages into one place, and the free plan includes every channel.

Questions

How do you grow on social media?

Post things people finish, answer, save or share, keep a steady rate, make each post for the place it appears, and answer the people who respond. Each platform rewards one of these most, so learn which before you start.

Which platform is the fastest to grow on?

Platforms where each post earns its own reach, such as TikTok and X, can grow a new account from one good post, because neither ranks mainly on follower count. Search-led platforms like YouTube and Pinterest grow more slowly but keep sending people to older posts.

Do followers still matter?

Less for reach than they did. TikTok says follower count is not a direct factor in For You, and about half of X’s For You comes from accounts people do not follow. Followers still see your posts first on most platforms.

How long does it take to grow on social media?

Judge it in months, not days: the studies compare posting rates by the week, not single posts. Hold one rate for at least a month before judging it, and compare each post with your own usual result.
