What are X Communities?

X Communities are topic groups run by their own admins and moderators. Who can join, who sees Community posts, and what it takes to start and run one.

The short answer

X Communities are groups on X built around a topic. X’s Help Center describes them as “dedicated spaces for people to connect and share around topics that matter to them.” Each one is started and run by people on X, its admins and moderators, who set and enforce its own rules on top of the X Rules.

Starting one takes X Premium: X’s Premium page says, “As a Premium subscriber, you can create a community on X to connect with people who share similar interests.” Joining one does not.

How joining works

You need a public account to join. The admin picks one of three membership types:

X Community membership types, from X’s Help Center, checked October 2026
MembershipHow you get in
OpenTap Join, review the Community’s rules, then Agree and join
Ask to join, with member invitesSend a request that a moderator approves or denies; anyone invited by the moderators is approved, and members can invite others
Ask to join onlySend a request; members cannot send invites

Who sees Community posts

Posting into a Community is a choice of audience. Before you post, you pick Everyone, which goes to your followers, or one of the Communities you belong to. X says Community posts appear on the Community page, in members’ Home timelines, in global search results, on your profile and in other timelines, much like regular posts.

Non-members can reply, but moderators can restrict non-members’ engagement or hide their replies. Anyone with a Community’s link can see its timeline, posts, and the list of its moderators and members. Your posts stay if the Community is deleted, and stay in it if you leave.

Admins and moderators

An admin owns the Community and can name as many moderators as they like. From X’s Help Center:

X Community roles, from X’s Help Center, checked October 2026
RoleWhat they do
AdminOwns the Community; edits its name, rules, cover photo and description; adds or removes moderators; the only role that can switch membership between Open and Restricted
ModeratorInvites and manages members, enforces the Community rules, reviews reported posts and chooses Hide post or Keep, removes members who break the rules
MemberPosts into the Community, reports posts, and can leave at any time

Who can be an admin

X lists four requirements for admin accounts, which must keep being met: the account must be public, since a switch to protected loses moderator privileges; at least six months old; have a verified email address or phone number; and not violate, or have a history of violating, X’s Terms of Service. If an account blocks a moderator, or a moderator blocks it, the account is removed from the Community so moderators can see every post.

Using Communities as a creator

A Community gives a topic its own timeline that members check on purpose. X’s own advice to moderators is to post and reply often, invite people who are interested rather than mass-inviting, and settle problems before hiding posts or removing members. For a creator that suggests:

  • Join a few Communities in your niche and post your most useful takes there, where the audience already shares the interest.
  • Start your own once you have regulars, and write rules that add to the X Rules without repeating them.
  • Pick the audience on each post: a Community post goes to that Community and its members’ Home timelines, while Everyone goes to your followers.

Questions

Do you need X Premium to join a Community?

No, you need a public account. X Premium is needed to create a Community.

Can people outside a Community see its posts?

Yes. X says Community posts can appear in search, on your profile and in other timelines, and anyone with the link can view the Community. Moderators can limit non-members’ replies.

What happens to my posts if I leave a Community?

They stay in the Community, including replies. They are also not deleted if the Community itself is deleted.

How old must an account be to admin an X Community?

At least six months, and it must be public, have a verified email or phone number, and have no history of violating X’s Terms of Service.
