The short answer
YouTube chapters split a video into titled sections, each with its own preview on the progress bar, so a viewer can see what is coming and jump to the part they want. You add them by listing timestamps and titles in the video’s description, or let YouTube make them automatically.
YouTube’s rules for chapters you write yourself are short: the first timestamp starts at 00:00, there are at least three in ascending order, and each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. Chapters you write override the automatic ones.
The rules, in YouTube’s words
From YouTube’s Help Center page on video chapters:
| Rule | What YouTube says |
|---|---|
| Where they go | In the Description, add a list of timestamps and titles. |
| The first one | Make sure that the first timestamp you list starts with 00:00. |
| How many | Your video should have at least three timestamps listed in ascending order. |
| How long | The minimum length for video chapters is 10 seconds. |
| Against automatic chapters | This option will override automatic video chapters. |
What a chapter list looks like
One line per chapter, the timestamp first and the title after it, in the order they play. A ten-minute cooking video might carry these lines in its description:
| Timestamp | Chapter title |
|---|---|
| 00:00 | What we are making |
| 00:40 | Ingredients |
| 02:15 | Making the dough |
| 06:30 | Baking |
| 09:10 | Tasting |
Room in the description
Chapters share the description with everything else, so two details from YouTube’s Help Center are worth knowing. “Video descriptions have a character limit of 5,000 characters,” and if you add a corrections section, YouTube says it “should appear after any video chapters.” Put the chapter list first, where viewers expect it, and keep the rest of the description below it.
Automatic chapters
YouTube can also add chapters on its own. The “Allow automatic chapters” box in YouTube Studio is checked by default for new uploads, and you can opt out for one video or for all of them. YouTube is clear that it does not promise them: “Not all videos are eligible for automatic chapters, and not all eligible videos will have automatic chapters.”
Chapters of either kind are switched off for some videos. In YouTube’s words, “If the channel has any active strikes, or if the content may be inappropriate to some viewers, the video chapters feature won’t be available.”
Who can add chapters
Adding chapters is one of YouTube’s advanced features. A channel qualifies through its history, or by verifying its identity with a valid ID or a video, according to YouTube’s page on feature access. If the chapters page tells you that you do not have access yet, that verification is the step it points to.
Why chapters are worth the two minutes
A chapter list costs a few lines of text and does several jobs:
- A viewer looking for one part finds it instead of leaving.
- The titles tell a new viewer what the video covers before they commit to it.
- Someone coming back to rewatch a step goes straight to it.
- Writing them is a check on the edit: a section you cannot name may not need to be there.
Adding chapters when you schedule
Because chapters live in the description, they can be written before the video goes out. In PostEase, the caption you write for a YouTube video is sent as its description, line breaks included, so a chapter list typed into the caption reaches YouTube with the video at the time you scheduled.
Questions
Why are my YouTube chapters not showing?
Check YouTube’s rules first: the first timestamp must be 00:00, there must be at least three in ascending order, and each chapter must last at least 10 seconds. Chapters are also unavailable if the channel has an active strike or the video may be inappropriate for some viewers, and adding them needs access to advanced features.
How many chapters does a YouTube video need?
At least three, according to YouTube, listed in ascending order and starting at 00:00.
How short can a YouTube chapter be?
10 seconds. YouTube’s Help Center gives that as the minimum length for a chapter.
Do my own chapters replace automatic ones?
Yes. YouTube says timestamps you add in the description override automatic video chapters.
