What is a YouTube Premiere?

A YouTube Premiere debuts a new video at a set time, with a public watch page, a countdown and live chat. How it compares with a scheduled publish.

The short answer

A YouTube Premiere debuts a new video at a time you set, as an event. Before it starts, a public watch page lets people set a reminder and chat; at the start a countdown plays; then everyone watches the video together, with live chat running beside it. Afterwards it stays on your channel as an ordinary video.

YouTube puts it in one line: “YouTube Premieres let you and your viewers watch and experience a new video together in real time.” The alternative is a scheduled publish, where a private video turns public at the time you chose.

Premiere or scheduled publish

Both put a video out at a time you choose; they differ in what happens before and at that moment. From YouTube’s Help Center:

What happens around a Premiere

YouTube describes three stages:

The stages of a YouTube Premiere, in YouTube’s own words, from its Help Center, checked October 2026
StageWhat YouTube says
BeforeA public watch page is created for your video to eventually premiere on.
BeforePremieres show up across YouTube just like regular uploads.
DuringWhen the countdown is over, viewers watch the video together in real time.
AfterAfter your video premieres, it stays on your channel as a regular upload.

When a Premiere is worth it

A Premiere earns its countdown when people are waiting for the video:

  • A launch, a trailer or a long-awaited episode, where the watch page can collect reminders days ahead.
  • A channel with an audience that likes to chat, since the live chat is the point.
  • A video you want to talk about as it plays, answering questions in the chat.
  • Not a routine upload: for those, a scheduled publish does the job without asking anyone to turn up.

YouTube’s own tips

YouTube’s Help Center gives two timings worth planning around. “Scheduling your premiere at least 24 hours in advance gives audiences around the world an opportunity to see the thumbnail in their subscriptions feed.” And for viewers who tap the reminder button, “they’ll get a notification about 30 minutes before the Premiere and another when it starts.”

It also suggests promoting the watch page’s own address on your other channels in the days before, and turning on live chat and chat replay so late arrivals can follow what was said.

Limits to know

YouTube lists a few: Shorts cannot premiere, and neither can 360 or VR180 video or an output above 1080p. A Community Guidelines strike also holds a Premiere back: YouTube says it “won’t publish during the penalty period” and has to be rescheduled afterwards, the same rule it applies to scheduled videos.

One detail catches people out with any scheduled video: YouTube says the published date on the watch page is based on Pacific time, so a video set for early morning in a time zone ahead of it can show the previous day’s date.

Premieres and PostEase

PostEase uploads a YouTube video at the time you schedule, with its title, description and cover. It does not set videos as Premieres, and today making a scheduled upload public is a step in YouTube Studio. If you want a Premiere, set it up in YouTube Studio when you upload.

Questions

Can you premiere a YouTube Short?

No. YouTube’s Help Center says Shorts aren’t supported for Premieres.

Does a Premiere stay on my channel afterwards?

Yes. After it premieres, it stays on your channel as a regular upload, without the countdown.

Is a Premiere better than a scheduled publish?

For a launch people are waiting for, a Premiere gathers them in one place with chat. For a routine upload, a scheduled publish is simpler and needs no audience to turn up.

Can viewers skip ahead during a Premiere?

No. YouTube says viewers can rewind but cannot forward past what has been shown live.
