The short answer
A TikTok photo post is a post made of still images instead of a video. You add up to 35 photos, which viewers swipe through, and you can put a sound, text, stickers and a filter on them, plus a description, hashtags and a link. TikTok’s Help Center lists photo posts beside video and text posts as one of the kinds of post you can make.
Photo posts suit content that reads well as separate frames: a step-by-step guide, a before and after, a list, or a set of pictures from one day. Each photo is its own frame, so a viewer can stop on one for as long as they like.
The kinds of TikTok post
From TikTok’s Help Center, the post types you start from the Add post + button:
| Post type | What it is | How it starts |
|---|---|---|
| Video | A recorded or uploaded video, with sound, effects and editing tools | Choose a maximum length and record, or tap Upload |
| Photo | Up to 35 photos from your device, swiped through, with a sound, text and stickers | Tap Photo, then Upload |
| Live photo | A photo taken in the TikTok camera, posted to feeds or your Story | Tap the Record button to take a photo |
| Text | Text on a background, with stickers, emojis or GIFs | Tap Text |
How to make a photo post
TikTok’s steps, in the app:
- Tap the Add post + button at the bottom.
- Tap Photo, then Upload, and select up to 35 photos.
- Tap Next. Swipe between photos to edit each one: add a filter, sound, text or stickers, or crop.
- Tap Next again to edit the cover, add a description, hashtags, people tags, a location and a link, and choose who can view it.
- Tap Post, or Drafts to save it; drafts are visible only to you.
Limits and settings
Two of TikTok’s rules catch people out. New posts keep the privacy setting of your previous post, so a post after an “Only you” post will also be “Only you” until you change it. And only public posts appear in the posts tab of your profile; private ones sit behind the lock icon.
TikTok’s developer documentation for photo posts adds the text limits that apply when a post is sent from another app:
| Field | Limit or meaning |
|---|---|
| Photos | Up to 35 per post |
| Cover | Any one of the photos, chosen by its position |
| Title | Up to 90 characters |
| Description | Up to 4,000 characters |
| Music | Recommended music can be added automatically and changed later in TikTok |
| AI-generated | A flag that labels the photos as AI-generated content |
Making photo posts work
A photo post is read frame by frame, so its structure matters more than its length:
- Make the cover the promise: the first photo should say what the set is about.
- Put one idea on each photo, with text large enough to read on a phone.
- Add a sound; a photo post with no sound plays silent in a feed full of video.
- Use the description for the detail, since it holds up to 4,000 characters when sent through TikTok’s API.
