The short answer
Duet and Stitch are TikTok’s two ways to make a video out of someone else’s. A Duet puts your recording beside theirs in a split screen, both playing at once. A Stitch takes a part of their video and plays it before yours, so you can answer, react or carry on from it.
TikTok’s Support pages describe them this way: Duet “allows you to post your video side-by-side with a video from another creator on TikTok,” and Stitch “allows you to combine a video on TikTok with one you’re creating.” Either way, the new video appears on the profile of the person who made it, and the original stays on its creator’s profile.
Duet or Stitch
The two share a menu and a setting but make different videos. From TikTok’s Support pages:
| What differs | Duet | Stitch |
|---|---|---|
| What it makes | Two videos in a split screen that play at the same time | A part of another video, followed by your own |
| How much of the original | The video plays alongside yours | You choose the part to use |
| Where it starts | Share button on the video, then Duet | Share button on the video, then Stitch |
| Where it is posted | The profile of the person who recorded it | The profile of the person who recorded it |
| Who can watch it | Set by the maker’s privacy settings | Set by the maker’s privacy settings |
| Can go to Stories | Yes, with Your Story | Yes, with Your Story |
Who can Duet or Stitch your videos
Only a public account can let others Duet or Stitch its videos. Within that, you choose who may, in Settings and privacy, then Privacy, then Reuse of content:
| Setting | Who can Duet or Stitch |
|---|---|
| Everyone | Anyone, while Duet or Stitch is on for that video |
| Friends | Only followers you follow back |
| Only you | No one else (TikTok lists this for Stitch) |
Turning it off, and what stays
You can switch reuse on or off for a single video, before posting with More options and Allow reuse of content, or afterwards from the video’s Privacy settings. TikTok notes that turning Stitch off also affects who can Duet, make stickers from the post, or add it to their Story.
Changing the setting does not undo what is already made. TikTok says that if you limit who can use your videos or delete one, “any existing Stitches that have already been made will remain on TikTok.” To remove them, Reuse of content history lists the Duets and Stitches made from each video.
The same controls sit in the TikTok Studio app, whose privacy settings cover interaction features including Duet and Stitch. Be careful with Remove all posts there: TikTok says it “will permanently remove your original post and all associated Duet and Stitch videos.” Download your original first if you want to keep it.
Using them well
Both formats borrow an audience’s attention from a video people already know, so they work best when you add something:
- Stitch a question someone asked and answer it in your own video, keeping the clip to the part that sets up your reply.
- Duet a tutorial or recipe to show yourself trying it, so the two halves compare at a glance.
- Credit the original in your description; the original creator’s settings decide whether you can reuse it at all.
- Leave reuse on for videos made to be answered, such as a question or a prompt, and off for ones you would rather keep whole.
Questions
What is the difference between a Duet and a Stitch?
A Duet plays your video beside another creator’s at the same time. A Stitch uses a part of their video, then plays yours after it.
Why can’t I Duet or Stitch a video?
The creator may have a private account, may allow only friends, or may have turned reuse off for that video. TikTok notes that not all videos have Duet or Stitch turned on.
Does deleting my video remove the Stitches made from it?
No. TikTok says existing Stitches remain on TikTok. Reuse of content history lets you remove them, and Remove all posts there also deletes your original.
Where does a Duet appear?
Only on the profile of the person who recorded it. The original video stays on its own creator’s profile.
