PostEaseThe short answer
TikTok LIVE is live video inside the TikTok app. TikTok’s Help Center says it “allows viewers and creators to interact in real time,” with features such as effects, multi-guest hosting, moderation and LIVE Gifts.
To go LIVE, TikTok says you must be at least 18 and have 1,000 followers, a follower count it notes “may vary across regions.” Viewers can send virtual Gifts bought with Coins, and the creator collects Diamonds in return. After a LIVE ends, TikTok keeps a replay for 30 days that you can download, clip or delete.
Who can go LIVE
TikTok’s Help Center lists these requirements, and adds that LIVE and Gift features are not available everywhere:
| To do this | You need |
|---|---|
| Go LIVE | To be at least 18, and 1,000 followers (may vary by region) |
| Send or receive Gifts in a LIVE | To be at least 18, or 19 in South Korea |
| Turn on LIVE Gifts | To live where LIVE Gifts is available, be 18 or older (19 in South Korea), be eligible to go LIVE, and have an account in good standing |
| Collect Diamonds | Not to be a government, politician, political party or other public interest account, which TikTok excludes |
How to go LIVE
From TikTok’s Help Center:
- In the TikTok app, tap the Add post + button at the bottom.
- Tap LIVE at the bottom; you may need to scroll across.
- Add a title, and set LIVE tools and settings, including safety settings.
- Tap Go LIVE. To finish, tap End LIVE at the top, then End now.
Gifts, Coins and Diamonds
Gifts are virtual items. A viewer buys Coins, in the app through the app store, on the TikTok website in supported countries, or with a TikTok gift card where redemption is available, then spends Coins to send a Gift; each Gift shows how many Coins it costs. Coins also pay for services such as Promote and Star Comments.
For the creator, TikTok describes LIVE Gifts as a way to collect Diamonds, “awarded based on the popularity of your LIVE.” Gifts pop up on screen while you stream, and the LIVE summary at the end shows the total Diamonds collected. You turn LIVE Gifts on or off in Settings on the LIVE screen before going live. Gifts, Coins and Diamonds are governed by TikTok’s Virtual Items Policy.
Guests and replays
Two tools change what a LIVE can be during and after the stream:
| Feature | What TikTok says it does | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-guest | Lets a creator host a limited number of guests in audio or video mode; viewers can request to join, or the creator invites; viewers can send Gifts to the creator and guests | Guests during the LIVE: requests from all viewers or followers only, moderators, and Panel, Grid or Fixed layout |
| LIVE replays | Saved recordings of past LIVE videos, available to view and download for 30 days | Profile, Menu, TikTok Studio, LIVE, LIVE recordings: download, clip or delete |
Getting more from a LIVE
A replay lasts 30 days, so the useful moments need to be saved before then. TikTok lets you clip a replay from TikTok Studio and post the clip as a regular video, or save it to post later. Clipping the best minute of a LIVE gives people who missed it a reason to come to the next one.
The LIVE tab at the top of the app shows creators who are live now, and LIVE videos also appear in the For You and Following feeds, the inbox, search and creators’ profiles, according to TikTok. The ordinary rules apply throughout: a LIVE follows the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service like any post.
