What is a YouTube Community Guidelines strike?

A YouTube Community Guidelines strike follows a warning and freezes uploads for a week or two. How strikes add up, what they block, and how to appeal one.

The short answer

A Community Guidelines strike is a penalty YouTube puts on a channel when its content breaks YouTube’s rules. YouTube’s Help Center calls the guidelines “the rules of the road for how to behave on YouTube,” and says they apply to all content, including unlisted and private videos, comments, links, posts and thumbnails.

A first violation is usually a warning rather than a strike. After that, each strike freezes parts of the channel for a while and stays on it for 90 days. Three strikes in the same 90 days may get the channel permanently removed.

How strikes add up

From YouTube’s Help Center page on strike basics:

StepWhat happens
WarningUsually the first violation. It can expire after 90 days if you take an optional policy training; a second violation of the same policy within 90 days may become a strike
First strikeA 1-week freeze on uploading and other features; the strike stays on the channel for 90 days
Second strikeWithin the same 90 days: no posting for 2 weeks
Third strikeWithin the same 90 days: the channel may be permanently removed

What a strike freezes

During the first strike’s week, YouTube lists what you cannot do:

  • Upload videos or live streams, or start a scheduled live stream.
  • Schedule a video to become public, or create a Premiere or add a trailer to an upcoming one.
  • Create custom thumbnails or posts.
  • Create, edit or add collaborators to playlists, or add or remove playlists with the Save button.

What happens to scheduled videos

This is the part that catches people who plan ahead. YouTube says: “Your scheduled public content is set to ‘private’ for the penalty period duration. You have to reschedule it when the freeze period ends.” Full privileges come back automatically after the week, but scheduled uploads do not go back to public on their own.

If you schedule YouTube videos from any tool, open YouTube Studio when a freeze ends and reschedule anything that was due during it. A strike can also cost access to advanced features, which YouTube explains how to regain separately.

Community Guidelines strikes and copyright strikes

YouTube keeps these as two separate systems:

Appealing a strike

You can appeal a warning or strike for 6 months after it was issued: in YouTube Studio, open the Dashboard, select the Channel violations card, then Appeal. Deleting the video does not remove a strike, and YouTube notes that if you delete it you will not be able to appeal again.

YouTube emails the result. If the content followed the guidelines, it is reinstated and the strike removed; if it followed them but is not right for all audiences, it may be age-restricted instead. If the strike stands, YouTube says there is no additional penalty for an appeal that is rejected.

Questions

How long does a YouTube strike last?

A Community Guidelines strike stays on your channel for 90 days from when it was issued. The posting freeze itself lasts 1 week for a first strike and 2 weeks for a second.

Does deleting a video remove a strike?

No. YouTube says deleting your content does not remove a strike, and once deleted, you cannot appeal again.

What happens to scheduled videos during a strike?

YouTube sets scheduled public content to private for the penalty period, and you have to reschedule it when the freeze ends.

How many strikes before a YouTube channel is deleted?

Three Community Guidelines strikes in the same 90-day period may get a channel permanently removed. A single case of severe abuse can lead to termination without warning.
