The short answer
A YouTube handle is your channel’s unique name starting with @, such as @youtubecreators. It is separate from your channel name, which does not have to be unique, and it gives your channel a short address: youtube.com/@ followed by the handle.
YouTube’s Help Center describes handles as “short and unique channel identifiers that make it easier for you to find and connect with creators on YouTube.” They show in comments, mentions, Live Chat and Shorts, and each channel has exactly one.
Handle naming rules
YouTube’s rules for what a handle can be:
| Rule | What YouTube says |
|---|---|
| Length | 3 to 30 characters; Han and Hangul 1 to 10; Ethiopic, Hiragana and Katakana 2 to 20 |
| Characters | Letters or numbers from one of 75 supported languages |
| Separators | Underscores, hyphens, periods and Latin middle dots, but not at the start or end |
| Case | Handles aren’t case-sensitive |
| Not allowed | URL-like or phone-number-like handles, ones already in use, and violent, offensive or spammy ones |
| Ownership | Handles can’t be sold or transferred, and YouTube can change, reclaim or remove one |
Your channel’s addresses
A channel can be reached by several URLs, all pointing to the same place. Handles replaced the older personalised addresses; YouTube’s page on channel URLs lists all four kinds:
| URL | Example | Status today |
|---|---|---|
| Handle URL | youtube.com/@youtubecreators | Created automatically when you choose or change your handle |
| Channel ID URL | youtube.com/channel/UC… | The standard address every channel has, based on its ID |
| Custom URL | youtube.com/c/YouTubeCreators | Can no longer be set up or changed; existing ones still work and redirect to the handle URL |
| Legacy username URL | youtube.com/user/YouTube | Still works for older channels; usernames can’t be changed |
Changing your handle
You change a handle in YouTube Studio, under Customization, then Profile, then Handle, and confirm with Publish. YouTube allows two changes within 14 days, and holds your previous handle for those 14 days in case you switch back; both the old and new handle URLs work in that window. After it, the old handle is free for anyone to take.
If the handle you want is taken, YouTube suggests adding periods, numbers or underscores. A channel created in passing, for example by commenting on mobile, may get a handle assigned automatically from its name, which you can edit at youtube.com/handle.
Choosing a handle that travels
A handle ends up on business cards, other profiles and spoken out loud, so a few choices help:
- Match the name you use on other platforms, so people searching one find the others.
- Keep to letters A to Z, numbers and the separators if your audience shares links widely. YouTube warns that other characters can make a handle hard to type and that some apps may not display youtube.com/@ links with them correctly.
- Avoid changing it once it is printed or linked: after the 14-day hold, the old handle URL stops reaching you and someone else can claim it.
Handles and PostEase
Your handle URL is the address to share for your channel. Add it to your PostEase link-in-bio page like any link, and it stays correct as long as the handle does. PostEase connects to the channel itself, so changing your handle does not disconnect it. YouTube, X, LinkedIn (personal profile), Pinterest, Bluesky, and WordPress publishing are live today; Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Threads are pending each platform's own API approval.
Questions
Is a YouTube handle the same as a channel name?
No. The handle is unique and starts with @; the channel name is the display name and does not have to be unique.
How often can you change your YouTube handle?
Twice within a 14-day period. YouTube holds the previous handle for 14 days, then it becomes available to others.
Can I still get a YouTube custom URL?
No. New custom URLs can no longer be set up or changed. Existing ones keep working and redirect to the handle URL.
Are YouTube handles case-sensitive?
No. YouTube’s Help Center says handles aren’t case-sensitive.
