What is a YouTube post?

A YouTube post is a text, image, poll, quiz or video share on your channel’s Posts tab, often called a community post. Its types, limits and where it shows.

The short answer

A YouTube post is something you publish on your channel that is not a video upload: a line of text, up to 10 images or GIFs, a poll, a quiz, or a share of a video or playlist. Many creators still call them community posts. They live on your channel’s Posts tab and can reach viewers in their feeds between uploads.

YouTube’s Help Center puts it this way: “You can create posts to connect and interact with your viewers through polls, quizzes, GIFs, text, music, images, and video.” It adds that posts “can give you more reach on YouTube and greater engagement with your audience.”

The types of post

YouTube’s page on creating a post lists the types and their limits:

Rules and limits

YouTube names a few conditions across its posts pages:

  • Posts aren’t available on a supervised account or a channel set as made for kids; such a channel can view past posts but can’t create new ones. YouTube’s audience settings page lists Posts among the features a made-for-kids channel loses, with the notification bell and channel memberships, to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
  • YouTube limits how many posts a channel can create in 24 hours. A “limit reached” message means trying again a day later.
  • Posts are not currently available in Germany.
  • A post that shares a video takes that video’s comment settings, so comments off on the video means comments off on the post.
  • Posts follow the Community Guidelines like videos do, and a post that breaks them can bring a strike.

Scheduling and AI tools

Posts can be scheduled: in Create, then Create post, open the arrow next to Post, choose Schedule Post and set a date, time and time zone. Scheduled posts wait in the Scheduled section of the Posts tab, and expired ones move to Archived, which only you can see.

In the YouTube mobile app, YouTube also offers generative AI tools for text and image posts, in English and in some countries: a tool that suggests wording, tone or length, image generation with Dream Screen, and AI image edits. YouTube says that when a post is made with these tools, “the tool will automatically disclose the use of AI for creators.”

What to post between uploads

Posts work best as the conversation around your videos, not a second channel to fill:

  • A poll on what the next video should cover, then a video that answers it.
  • An image from behind the scenes of something you are filming.
  • A share of an older video when a new one builds on it.
  • A quiz on what the latest video taught, with the explanation pointing back to it.

YouTube posts and PostEase

PostEase schedules YouTube videos with their title, description and cover, beside your posts for other platforms. It does not create YouTube posts; write and schedule those in YouTube with Create post.

Questions

Are YouTube posts the same as community posts?

Yes. Many creators still say community posts; YouTube’s Help Center calls them posts, found on a channel’s Posts tab.

Can you schedule a YouTube post?

Yes. In Create post, choose the arrow next to Post, then Schedule Post, and pick a date, time and time zone.

How many images can a YouTube post have?

Up to 10 images or GIFs, each up to 16 MB, in JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP. YouTube suggests a 1:1 ratio, since that is how images show in the feed.

Why can’t I create posts on my channel?

YouTube lists a supervised account, a channel set as made for kids, a channel role without access, the 24-hour post limit, and Germany, where posts are not currently available.
