The short answer
An Instagram collab post is one post or reel that two or more accounts publish together. The account that makes it invites the others as collaborators; each one that accepts is listed as an author, the post appears on their profile, and it is shared with their followers. Instagram calls the feature Collabs.
The difference from a tag is reach. A tag or mention puts your name on someone’s post but does not show it to your followers; a collab shows the same post to every collaborator’s audience, with the likes and comments counted in one place.
How a collab post works
Instagram’s Help Center sets out the rules, in its own words:
| Question | What Instagram says |
|---|---|
| How many collaborators? | You can add up to 5 collaborators to your post |
| Who sees it? | the post will be shared with their followers |
| Who sees the reactions? | Accounts that accept a collaboration invite can see all likes and comments on the post |
| Who owns it? | The person who created the post is the primary creator |
| Who can delete it? | Only the original creator can delete the post |
| Can a collaborator leave? | The collaborator can also leave the collaboration at any time |
| Stories? | You can’t add collaborators to your stories |
Collab, tag or mention
The three look alike on the post and do different things:
| What it does | Collab | Tag or mention |
|---|---|---|
| Shown to your followers | Yes | No |
| Listed as an author | Yes, once you accept | No |
| Needs your approval | Yes, you accept the invite | No, unless you approve tags by hand |
| Works in stories | No | Mentions do |
How to invite a collaborator
In the Instagram app, before you publish, Instagram’s steps are:
- Tap Tag people.
- Tap Invite collaborator.
- Search for the account you want to add as a collaborator, then tap the account.
- Tap Done.
Private accounts
A public account can invite public or private accounts. A private account can invite either, but only accounts that follow it, and if a public account accepts, Instagram notes that the post will be shared publicly through the public collaborator. Instagram shows a private account an explanation of this the first time it invites someone.
Collabs and scheduling tools
Scheduling tools publish to Instagram through Meta’s API, which has its own, lower limit. Meta’s reference for creating Instagram media describes the collaborators field as “for Feed image, Reels and Carousels only” and “a list of up to 3 instagram usernames”. So a post made in the app can carry up to five collaborators, and one published through the API up to three, on feed images, reels and carousels.
Whichever way you publish, the invite still has to be accepted in Instagram: each collaborator gets a message, reviews it and taps Accept before the post reaches their followers.
When a collab is worth it
A collab suits any post that belongs to two audiences at once:
- A brand and a creator on a sponsored post, so the creator’s followers see it and the brand keeps it on its own profile.
- Two creators on a joint video, each bringing their followers to the other.
- A business and a partner: a venue and a performer, a shop and a maker, a team and a client.
- A launch across several of your own accounts, posted once instead of three times.
Questions
How many collaborators can an Instagram post have?
Up to 5 on a post made in the Instagram app, according to Instagram’s Help Center. Through Meta’s API, which scheduling tools use, the collaborators field takes up to 3 usernames, on feed images, reels and carousels.
Does a collab post show on both profiles?
Yes, once the invite is accepted. The post appears on each collaborator’s profile and is shared with their followers, and the original creator remains its owner.
Can you add collaborators to an Instagram story?
No. Instagram’s Help Center says you can mention other accounts in your stories, but you can’t add collaborators to them.
What happens to a collab post if the creator deletes it?
Only the original creator can delete it, and if they do, it is removed from every collaborator’s profile as well.
Is a collab the same as tagging someone?
No. A tag does not show the post to the tagged account’s followers or list them as an author; a collab does both, once the invite is accepted.
