The short answer
An Instagram Story is a full-screen photo or video that disappears after 24 hours. Stories sit in a row at the top of the app rather than in the feed, and people tap through them one after another.
Instagram’s Help Center puts it this way: “With Stories, you can share photos and videos that disappear from your profile, Feed and messages after 24 hours, unless you add them to your profile as story highlights.” Because they are brief and informal, Stories suit behind-the-scenes moments, quick updates and questions to your audience.
Story, post or Reel
The three formats do different jobs:
| What differs | Story | Feed post | Reel |
|---|---|---|---|
| How long it lasts | 24 hours, unless saved as a highlight | Stays on your profile | Stays on your profile |
| Where it is seen | The row of Stories at the top of the app | The feed and your profile grid | The Reels tab, the feed and your profile |
| Who mostly sees it | People who already follow you | Followers and, through recommendations, others | Often people who do not follow you yet |
| How people respond | Replies arrive as messages | Likes and comments in public | Likes and comments in public |
Mentions and replies
A Story has two ways to start a conversation. A reply to your Story arrives in your messages, not as a public comment. A mention, when someone tags your account in their own Story, notifies you too. Meta’s developer documentation describes what a business account receives:
| Point | What Meta says |
|---|---|
| What arrives | Instagram notifies an Instagram Professional account when a user mentions it in a story. |
| Where it lands | the IG Professional account gets a message in the inbox referencing the story that the user posted |
| From private accounts | Story mentions from a private account will only flow in if the account follows the said account. |
| How long it lasts | a story is temporary (it disappears after 24 hours or when deleted by the user) |
Highlights
A highlight keeps a Story past its 24 hours, pinned as a circle under your bio. Businesses and creators use highlights as a standing menu: prices, reviews, how to order, frequently asked questions, a product launch. Each highlight can hold many Stories, so they work best grouped by topic.
What to share in Stories
Stories reward frequency and informality more than polish:
- Behind the scenes of making the thing your posts show finished.
- Polls and questions, which ask for an answer and show you what your audience wants.
- A nudge to your newest post or Reel, for followers who missed it in the feed.
- Time-bound news: a restock, a sale ending tonight, a live event starting soon.
Stickers that ask for a reply
Most of the ideas above run on stickers. Instagram’s Help Center says that when you share a photo or video to your story, “you can add stickers by tapping Stickers at the top”, and its list includes Poll sticker or emoji slider, Question, Countdown, Add yours and Link. A poll or question asks for a tap or a reply, which is how a Story starts a conversation.
Linking out from a Story
A Story can send people to a website with the link sticker. Meta’s Business Help Center describes it: “When people tap on this link sticker in your story, they’ll be redirected to the linked website.” It adds that link stickers “can only be used in organic Instagram Stories”; Story ads carry a call-to-action sticker instead.
Stories and PostEase
PostEase does not publish Stories. Its Automations answer them: a reply to your Story that contains a keyword you choose, or a mention of your account in someone else’s Story, can start an automatic message. Automations are on the Creator plan, at $15 a month. YouTube, X, LinkedIn (personal profile), Pinterest, Bluesky, and WordPress publishing are live today; Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Threads are pending each platform's own API approval.
Questions
How long does an Instagram Story last?
24 hours, according to Instagram, unless you add it to your profile as a story highlight, where it stays until you remove it.
Where do replies to my Story go?
To your messages. A reply to a Story is a private message to you, not a public comment.
Do I get notified when someone mentions me in their Story?
Yes. A professional account gets a message in its inbox referencing the Story, according to Meta. From a private account, that happens only if the person follows you.
Can you schedule Instagram Stories?
PostEase does not schedule Stories. Its Automations can still answer Story replies and mentions.
