The short answer
Instagram Notes are short text updates, up to 60 characters, that sit at the top of people’s Instagram inbox and above your profile picture on your profile. Each note lasts up to 24 hours, you can have one at a time, and a new note replaces the old one.
Instagram’s Help Center describes Notes as “a space to share updates and thoughts as short posts with certain people.” Instagram’s own blog puts the difference from Stories plainly: “Unlike Stories that are all about the visuals, Notes focus on short and sweet conversations.”
Who sees what
A note invites three kinds of response, each with different visibility. From Instagram’s Help Center:
| Response | Who can see it |
|---|---|
| A like | Only the person who shared the note |
| A comment | Anyone who can see the note |
| A reply | Only you and the person replying; it opens a direct conversation in the inbox |
| Your reply to a comment | Added as a comment that others viewing the note can see |
| Activity on a Close Friends note | Others on the list can see who liked or commented |
Making a note
Tap your note at the top of your inbox or profile, then Leave a new note. Type up to 60 characters, choose the audience, and tap Share. Instagram’s blog lists two audiences: followers you follow back, or your Close Friends list. You can delete a note at any time; after 24 hours it and its comments disappear, though a reported note can still be reviewed afterwards.
A note can also show what you are listening to: linking Spotify lets a note update with the song you are playing.
Notes against Stories
Both last a day, but they do different jobs:
| What differs | Note | Story |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Up to 60 characters of text and emoji | Photos and videos |
| Where it shows | Top of the inbox, and above your profile picture | The Stories tray |
| How many | One at a time; a new note replaces the old | As many as you post |
| Audience | Followers you follow back, or Close Friends | Your usual audience, or Close Friends |
| Lasts | Up to 24 hours | 24 hours |
Using notes as a creator
Instagram’s ideas for notes centre on starting conversations:
- Ask a question: replies arrive as direct messages, which turns a note into a conversation starter.
- Point to something new, such as a post going up or a link in your bio, in a line people see before they open a chat.
- Keep the audience in mind: notes reach followers you follow back or Close Friends, not every follower.
- Swap notes rather than stacking them; a new one replaces the last.
