The short answer
Instagram Close Friends is a list you choose of people who can see things you share only with them. Instead of posting a story to everyone who can see your account, you pick Close Friends when you share it, and only the people on that list see it.
Instagram launched it in November 2018 for stories, saying “sometimes what you want to share isn’t for everyone.” Its Help Center now lists more: you can choose the list “when you share things like a post, note, reel, or story.”
What people on the list see
Being on someone’s list is not secret. From Instagram’s Help Center pages on Close Friends:
| Question | What Instagram says |
|---|---|
| Do they know they are on it? | Yes: they see a Close Friends label on your notes, reels or stories, and may see a green ring around your profile photo |
| Are they notified when added or removed? | No |
| Can someone ask to be added? | No one can request to be added |
| Do they see each other? | On a reel or note, others on the list can see who liked, commented or shared, and how |
| How long do stories last? | Close Friends stories disappear after 24 hours, like other stories |
Setting up the list
Go to your profile, open the menu, and under Who can see your content tap Close Friends. Select the people to add, search for anyone not shown, and tap Done. You can change the list at any time, and no one is told when you do.
From a stories feature to more formats
At launch in 2018, Close Friends was for stories only: Instagram’s announcement said “Only you can see your close friends list,” and marked a Close Friends story with a green badge and a green ring around the sharer’s profile photo in the Stories tray. The list itself is still private to you; what people on it see is the label on what you share with them.
Since then the same list has been extended to reels, notes and posts, so one list now controls a small audience across several formats rather than stories alone.
Sharing to Close Friends
Where you choose the list depends on what you share:
| Format | Where you choose Close Friends |
|---|---|
| Story | Tap Close Friends at the bottom when you are ready to share |
| Reel | Tap Audience and select Close Friends before sharing |
| Post or note | Listed by Instagram among the things the list can be used for |
How creators use it
Because the list is small and its members know they are on it, Close Friends works as an inner circle:
- Test a hook or an idea on a small, friendly group before posting it to everyone.
- Share behind-the-scenes and work in progress that is not ready for the main feed.
- Thank collaborators, early supporters or a team with something only they see.
