What is an Instagram broadcast channel?

An Instagram broadcast channel is a one-to-many chat where a creator posts updates and members react, reply and vote. Who can start one and how people join.

The short answer

An Instagram broadcast channel, which Instagram now mostly calls a channel, is a one-to-many chat in the Instagram inbox. The creator and any collaborators post text, video, voice notes and polls; members can react, reply and vote, but cannot start messages of their own.

Instagram’s Help Center suggests using one for “announcements, behind-the-scenes content and event details, or upcoming collaborations.” Channels are public and discoverable by anyone on Instagram, and they are still rolling out, so not every account has them.

Who can do what

From Instagram’s Help Center pages on creating and joining channels:

Roles in an Instagram channel, from Instagram’s Help Center and Instagram for Creators, checked October 2026
RoleWhat they can do
Creator (admin)Start the channel, set its audience, end date and profile visibility, post, and invite collaborators
CollaboratorSend messages and moderate, but not change channel settings
MemberRead, react, reply and vote in polls; cannot send messages

Starting and growing a channel

A channel can be started by a public account with more than 1,000 followers: in Messages, tap Compose, then Create channel, then name it and choose its audience, when it ends, and whether it shows on your profile. Sending the first message notifies all your followers once; after that, only people who join get notifications.

Ways to invite people to an Instagram channel, from Instagram’s Help Center, checked October 2026
InviteHow it works
First messageA one-time notification to all followers
Invite linkAlways on; it can be reset but not turned off
StoriesA join sticker, or a message from the channel shared as an image people can tap
ProfilePin the channel link to your profile

Subscriber-only channels

Creators with Instagram Subscriptions can open a subscriber broadcast channel, which needs at least one subscriber. Anyone can find it, but only subscribers who follow you can join, and Instagram says up to 1 million people can join a broadcast channel.

Using a channel well

Instagram for Creators frames a channel as a quick, casual line to the people who care most. Its tips: give the channel a descriptive name and a welcome message that says what it is for, use voice notes for a personal touch, ask questions with polls and prompts to gather feedback or ideas, and invite another creator to chat live in the channel.

Things to know

Points from Instagram’s pages worth knowing before you start:

  • Members’ reactions, replies and poll answers are visible to anyone on Instagram, and others may see who is a member.
  • Messages a collaborator sends are discoverable by anyone, even if the collaborator’s own account is private.
  • Branded content shared in a channel needs the paid partnership label, as in posts.
  • You can run more than one channel for different groups or topics, and use insights to see what each responds to.
