The short answer
The Trends tab is a part of YouTube Analytics that shows what your audience and viewers across YouTube are searching for and watching, so you can pick topics people already want. Its most useful idea is the content gap: a search where viewers cannot find a good enough video yet.
YouTube’s Help Center says the tab shows “what your audience and viewers across YouTube are searching for,” and that its insights “can help you think of your next video ideas.” It is in YouTube Studio, under Analytics, then Trends. From July 2026 an updated Studio is rolling out, so it may look different.
What the tab shows
From YouTube’s Help Center:
| Card | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Top searches | Top searches from your audience and your saved searches over the last 28 days |
| Breakout videos | Well-performing videos from creators similar to your channel |
| Recent videos | Videos on topics your audience watched in the last 28 days |
| Content gaps for Shorts | Shorts search terms related to what your audience watched |
| Audience interest | How interested your audience is in a search, from very low to very high, based on videos watched over 1,000 times a week |
Content gaps
YouTube defines a content gap as a search where viewers cannot find enough quality results. It happens when:
| Situation | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| No results | Nobody has made the video; make it |
| No exact match | Videos exist near the topic, but none answers the exact search |
| Results not relevant | Existing videos are old or low quality; a better, current one can take the search |
Using it to plan
A routine that turns the tab into a list of videos:
- Start from Top searches and save the ones that fit your channel, so later cards draw on them.
- Look at Breakout videos for formats and angles working for channels like yours, then make your own version.
- Check Audience interest before committing to a topic.
- Use content gaps for Shorts as a list of quick, specific videos to test.
Trends, Ask Studio and the Inspiration tab
YouTube’s idea tools are shifting. The older Inspiration tab is being gradually deprecated from August 2026, and YouTube points creators to Ask Studio for brainstorming. The Trends tab stays in Analytics as the data side: what people search for and watch. TikTok works the same idea from its side: Creator Search Insights has a Content gap tab for topics with many searches but few high-quality videos.
