What is YouTube likeness detection?

YouTube likeness detection finds AI-altered videos of a creator’s face. How to enroll, what to do with a match, and what a likeness claim on your video means.

The short answer

Likeness detection is a YouTube Studio tool that searches new uploads for videos where your face appears to be altered or generated by AI. YouTube’s Help Center says it “works similarly to Content ID, except the scan searches for a creator’s likeness” instead of copyrighted material. When it finds a match, you review it and can ask for removal through YouTube’s privacy complaint process.

The other side of it is the likeness claim: a claim that can appear on a video containing altered or AI-generated content that matches a specific person’s face or voice. YouTube says a likeness claim affects only the video, not the channel, and that a removal through the privacy process does not bring a strike.

Who can use likeness detection

YouTube calls the feature experimental and says it is not available in some countries. The requirements:

What to do with a match

Matches appear under Content detection, Likeness, For review, and can be sorted by a video’s views or a channel’s subscribers. For each one you can submit a likeness removal request through the privacy complaint process, submit a copyright removal request if your own footage was used, or move it to the archive and leave it up. YouTube says it weighs factors such as parody and satire, so not every request leads to removal, and that in this experimental phase the tool may also surface real, unaltered clips of you, which privacy rules do not cover.

You can stop detection at any time under Manage likeness detection; YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours to stop, and the list of matches is no longer available afterwards.

If your video gets a likeness claim

YouTube emails you and shows the claim in the Content tab of YouTube Studio. Your options, and how a dispute plays out:

StepWhat happens
Leave itIf the claim is valid, do nothing; you can act later
DisputeOnly for a valid reason: permission, parody or satire or public interest, no altered likeness, or the person is not in the video
Claimant repliesWithin 30 days: release, reinstate (you may then appeal), or file a privacy complaint
No replyThe claim expires after 30 days
Privacy complaint upheldThe video can be removed, without a strike

What does not protect a video

Two settings people might expect to help do not. YouTube says labeling a video as altered or AI-generated does not let you use someone’s likeness without permission, and that private or unlisted videos can receive likeness claims too. A dispute cannot be canceled once sent, and YouTube warns that disputing without a valid reason, or abusing the process, can lead to penalties on the video or channel.

Channel Owners or Managers over 18, where the experimental feature is available, after verifying with a government ID and a selfie video.
