The short answer
YouTube Studio is the creator side of YouTube, with help for computers, Android and iPhone or iPad. YouTube’s Help Center calls it “the home for creators,” where “you can manage your presence, grow your channel, interact with your audience, and make money all in one place.”
Watching happens on YouTube; running the channel happens in Studio. Uploads, scheduling, analytics, replies to comments, copyright claims and monetization settings all live there.
The left menu
YouTube’s Help Center describes each section of the menu:
| Section | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Dashboard | An overview of new activity on your channel, and what is new on YouTube |
| Content | Your videos, live streams, posts and playlists |
| Analytics | Performance of the channel and each video, in YouTube Analytics |
| Community | Comments on your videos, and mentions of your channel by other creators |
| Subtitles | Subtitles and captions for your videos |
| Content detection | Submitting copyright takedown requests |
| Earn | Monetization settings, if you are in the YouTube Partner Program |
| Customization | Your channel’s layout, branding and basic info |
| Audio Library | Music and sound effects to use in your videos |
Inside one video
Open a video from the Content page to manage it on its own. YouTube lists Details for the title, description and settings; Analytics for that video’s metrics; Editor to trim, add end screens and audio tracks, and blur; Comments; Subtitles for multi-language audio and translated titles and descriptions; Copyright to view and manage claims; and Clips.
Scheduling a video
Scheduling in Studio turns a private video public at a set time. Select Create, then Upload videos, add the file and details, open the Schedule card, and set the date, time and time zone. To change the time later, keep the video Private and edit the draft; to publish at once, set it to Public.
Two details from YouTube’s Help Center are worth knowing. The “Published on” date on the watch page is based on Pacific Standard Time. And if your channel has a Community Guidelines strike, a scheduled video is set to private for the penalty period and must be rescheduled when it ends.
Public, unlisted and private
Every upload has one of three visibility settings, changed from the Content page. From YouTube’s Help Center:
| Feature | Private | Unlisted | Public |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can share the URL | No | Yes | Yes |
| Can show up in search, related videos and recommendations | No | No | Yes |
| Posted on your channel | No | No | Yes |
| Shows in the subscriber feed | No | No | Yes |
| Can be commented on | No | Yes | Yes |
Default visibility
YouTube says the default for creators aged 13 to 17 is private, and for creators 18 or older it is public. Anyone can change a video to public, private or unlisted. Private videos can be shared with chosen people by email from the Visibility box, but comments are off on them; YouTube suggests unlisted if you want comments on a video that is not public.
A weekly Studio routine
Studio has more sections than most creators open. A short weekly pass covers the ones that change week to week:
- Dashboard: new activity, and any policy or creator updates YouTube posts there.
- Content with the Claims filter: catch copyright claims before a video is scheduled to go public.
- Community: answer comments while the video is still being recommended.
- Analytics: compare the week’s uploads to your usual before planning the next ones.
Questions
Where do I reply to comments in YouTube Studio?
Under Community in the left menu, for comments across your videos, or in Comments inside a single video. Community also shows mentions of your channel by other creators.
How do I schedule a video in YouTube Studio?
Upload the video, open the Schedule card, set the date, time and time zone, and select Schedule. The video stays private until then.
What is the difference between unlisted and private?
Anyone with the link can watch an unlisted video, and it can take comments. A private video can only be seen by you and the people you invite, and has no comments.
Where are copyright claims in YouTube Studio?
On the Content page, filter by Claims, or open a video and select Copyright to view and manage its claims.
