The short answer
Usually the words, rarely the media, and sometimes only for minutes. Instagram lets you edit a caption at any time. LinkedIn lets you edit the text of a post, marks it Edited, and does not let you replace its photos, videos or documents. Threads allows text edits for 15 minutes. X allows up to 5 edits in the first hour, and only with a subscription. YouTube lets you change a video’s title, description and settings in YouTube Studio whenever you like.
If what is wrong is the video or image itself, the fix on most platforms is to delete the post and publish it again, which starts its numbers from zero. That is why the check before posting matters more than the edit after it.
Platform by platform
From each platform’s help pages, read in November 2026:
| Platform | What you can edit | How long | Marked as edited |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add, edit or delete the caption | No limit stated | Not stated on the help page | |
| Threads | The text only; no attachments added or removed | 15 minutes | Edited, if anyone interacted before you finished |
| X | Text and media of original posts and Quotes, up to 5 edits | 1 hour, with a subscription | An edited label, with earlier versions viewable |
| The text only; rich media cannot be replaced | No limit stated | Edited | |
| YouTube | Title, description, captions and comment settings | No limit stated | Not stated on the help page |
| TikTok | Not described after posting on the help pages read | Not described | Not described |
Instagram and Threads
Instagram’s Help Center says you can add a caption to a photo or video you have already shared, or edit or delete the one you wrote: tap Options above the post, make the change, then tap Done.
On Threads, the Instagram Help Center says you can edit the text of a post or reply only within 15 minutes of posting, through Options, then Edit. Attachments cannot be added or removed. If anyone likes, replies, reposts or quotes before you finish, the post shows Edited. If sharing to the fediverse is on, Threads waits 15 minutes before sharing your post to other servers, to allow for edits.
X
X’s Help Center says editing needs X Premium or a Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra plan on The X Subscription. After you publish an original post or a Quote, you have 1 hour and up to 5 edits to change the text, add or delete words, or rearrange and tag media. The post then shows an edited icon and label, and anyone can click into it to see the earlier versions; engagement on earlier versions is kept.
LinkedIn and YouTube
LinkedIn Help says you can edit the text of posts shared from your homepage, a group or a LinkedIn Page, and the word Edited then appears next to the post. Only the text can change: photos, articles, documents and videos cannot be replaced, and a new URL will not show a new preview image. To change shared media, LinkedIn says to delete the post and create a new one.
YouTube Help says that after you upload, you can change the video’s details in YouTube Studio, from its title to captions and comment settings: select Content, click the video, change the settings and save. Titles are limited to 100 characters and descriptions to 5,000. To flag a mistake in the video itself, YouTube lets you add a line starting “Correction:” to the description, with the timestamp and explanation, which shows viewers a View Corrections card.
| Detail | Limit or note |
|---|---|
| Title | Up to 100 characters |
| Description | Up to 5,000 characters, with bold, italic and strikethrough |
| Corrections | A “Correction:” line in the description adds a View Corrections card |
| Captions and comment settings | Changed in YouTube Studio |
TikTok
TikTok’s Help Center describes choosing the cover and adding text before you post, and does not describe editing a caption afterwards on the pages read for this post. It does describe deleting: a deleted post stays in TikTok’s system for up to 30 days, and you can restore it, with its comments and likes, from Settings and privacy, Activity center, Recently deleted.
Edit before it posts instead
Most of these rules push the real checking to before the post goes out. Read the caption once on a phone, check links and tags, and look at the cover frame. If you schedule posts, the window to fix things is the time between scheduling and publishing, and it costs nothing.
In PostEase, a scheduled post is open until it publishes: open it from the calendar and change the caption, the time or its channels in the same editor you scheduled it in.
