The short answer
Every big platform now lets fans pay a creator directly, in two shapes: one-off payments, such as tips during a live stream or gifts on a video, and recurring ones, such as monthly memberships or subscriptions. YouTube calls these “fan funding.” Instagram, Facebook and TikTok sell virtual items (stars, badges, Coins) that turn into creator earnings; X sells subscriptions and lets profiles link to outside payment apps through Tips.
The rules differ more than the ideas. Some need a partner program first, as on YouTube; some have a follower minimum, such as Instagram Gifts at 500 and TikTok Series at 10,000; and the share a creator keeps is set by each platform and by Apple’s and Google’s in-app fees.
One-off payments
From each platform’s help pages, as covered in our entry on each feature:
| Platform | Feature | Where fans use it | Key requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Super Chat and Super Stickers | Live chat | YouTube Partner Program, 18 or older |
| YouTube | Super Thanks | Videos and Shorts | YouTube Partner Program, 18 or older |
| Gifts | Reels | Professional account, 18 or older, 500 followers | |
| Badges | Instagram Live | Professional account, 18 or older; Instagram takes 0% | |
| Stars | Live, reels, videos, photos and text posts | Professional mode or a Page; $0.01 per Star | |
| TikTok | LIVE Gifts | TikTok LIVE | 18 or older (19 in South Korea), eligible to go LIVE |
| X | Tips | A cash icon on the profile, linking to outside payment apps | X takes no cut; payment happens in the outside app (X’s 2021 announcement, updated 2022) |
Recurring and paid content
For steady income, the platforms offer memberships, subscriptions or paid collections:
| Platform | Feature | What fans get |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Channel memberships | Monthly perks: badges, emoji, members-only videos and posts |
| Subscriptions | Subscriber-only stories, reels, posts, Lives and channels, for a monthly fee | |
| X | Creator Subscriptions | Subscriber-only content and a badge on replies, monthly |
| TikTok | Series | A one-off purchase of up to 80 paywalled videos |
What to check before turning one on
The help pages repeat a few conditions across platforms:
- A payout account, set up before fans pay, or earnings wait (Instagram) or can be lost (Meta’s terms give six months to enroll for Gifts).
- Monetization policies: every platform ties these features to its content and partner monetization rules.
- Location: most features are available only in listed countries.
- Fees: X says standard platform fees, such as Apple’s or Google’s, come off subscription earnings, and Instagram says Google and Apple take 30% of badge purchases.
Choosing where to start
Start where your audience already gathers live or comments most. If you stream, the live tipping features (Super Chat, badges, LIVE Gifts, Stars) need nothing more from viewers than a tap. If you have a smaller core of committed fans, a monthly membership or subscription pays more steadily. If you teach, a paid collection such as TikTok Series sells the course itself.
Questions
Which platforms let fans tip creators?
YouTube (Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks), Instagram (Gifts on reels, badges on Live), Facebook (Stars) and TikTok (LIVE Gifts). X’s Tips feature links a profile to outside payment apps instead of paying through X.
How much do creators earn from Instagram Gifts and Facebook Stars?
Both pay $0.01 USD per star received, according to Meta, minus deductions.
Do I need a partner program to get fan payments?
On YouTube, yes: Super Chat, Super Thanks and memberships need the YouTube Partner Program. Other platforms set their own eligibility, such as Instagram Gifts’ 500 followers.
