Text: 500 characters, and a way past it
The 500-character limit has been part of Threads since its launch in 2023, and it shapes how people write there: short, direct, one idea at a time. Emoji count by their size in bytes, so they use up the limit faster than letters.
For anything longer, Meta added text attachments in September 2025: up to 10,000 characters attached to a post and read within the app, instead of screenshots of a notes app. Keep the post itself as the hook, and put the detail in the attachment.
One topic per post
Threads uses topic tags rather than strings of hashtags. Its Help Centre says you can tag up to 1 topic per post, up to 50 characters, with or without a # in front. People who tap the topic see other posts about it, so pick the one topic your post belongs to, in the words people would search for.
Threads and Instagram, side by side
Many people post to both Threads and Instagram, and the limits differ more than the shared login suggests. Instagram’s Help Centre and Meta’s Threads documentation give these figures.

Links
A post can include up to 5 links. Meta’s documentation says that from 22 December 2025, posts with more than 5 links fail when they are created through its API. One clear link in a post is usually enough; more splits the reader’s attention.
Images and carousels
Use JPEG or PNG images in sRGB, up to 8 MB, between 320 and 1,440 pixels wide. Threads accepts very wide or tall shapes, up to 10:1, but on a phone a vertical 4:5 or 3:4 image takes the most room in the feed. A carousel holds 2 to 20 items and can mix photos and videos.
Video
Use MP4 or MOV, encoded in H.264 or HEVC, with AAC audio, at 23 to 60 frames a second, up to 1,920 pixels wide. Meta recommends 9:16 vertical. A video can be up to 5 minutes and 1 GB.
