What are Instagram Insights?

Instagram Insights are the free analytics on a public Instagram account. What views, viewers and watch time mean, and the 90-day and 100-account rules.

The short answer

Instagram Insights are Instagram’s built-in analytics. Instagram’s Help Center says that with a public account “you can use free insights to learn more about overall trends across your followers and your content’s performance,” for the account as a whole and for each post, story, reel and Live.

The overview shows Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared, for any period within the past 90 days. Any public account, personal or professional, can see them; switching to private removes access, and Instagram says you get past data back if you go public again within 90 days.

The main metrics

Instagram’s definitions, from its Help Center:

Instagram Insights metrics, from Instagram Help, checked October 2026
MetricWhat Instagram says it counts
ViewsThe number of times your content was played or displayed: reels, posts, stories, Lives and ads
ViewersUnique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once; for reels, whether or not it played
InteractionsActions such as likes, comments, saves and shares
Accounts engagedUnique accounts that interacted, split into followers and non-followers for posts, stories and Lives
Total followersGrowth, top locations, age range and most active times, once you have at least 100 followers
Content you sharedHow many stories, reels or posts you published in the period

Views and viewers are different

Views counts every time content is shown or played, so one person watching a reel three times adds three views. Viewers counts each account once. Instagram says the gap between them is repeat viewing, and marks viewers and several other metrics as estimated and in development.

Reels have their own set: views count each time a reel starts to play or replay; watch time is the total time it was played, replays included; average watch time is watch time divided by initial views, the first play in a reel session; and follows counts accounts that followed you after viewing it.

Where to find them

On your profile, tap Professional dashboard if you have a professional account, or Your dashboard if you have a personal one. Each metric opens a detailed view, and the (i) icon shows its definition. For a single post or reel, tap View insights under it; for a story or Live, open it and swipe up. Insights are also on instagram.com.

Reading them well

A few habits follow from how Instagram defines its numbers:

  • Compare like with like: views for reach, accounts engaged for real interest.
  • For reels, read average watch time beside views; a short average watch time beside many views suggests people left early.
  • Check followers against non-followers in accounts engaged to see whether a post reached new people.
  • Export or note numbers you want to keep, since account insights only go back 90 days.

Questions

Do you need a business account to see Instagram Insights?

No. Instagram says any public account, personal or professional, can see insights. A private account cannot.

What is the difference between views and viewers on Instagram?

Views count every time content is shown or played, including repeats. Viewers count each unique account once.

How far back do Instagram Insights go?

Account insights cover any range within the past 90 days. Insights for an individual post or reel are available for up to two years after it was published.

Why can’t I see my audience demographics?

Instagram shows demographics only for preset timeframes and when you have reached or engaged more than 100 accounts. Try a longer preset, such as Last 30 days.
