Story Highlights are named collections of your past stories that sit on your Instagram profile. A story normally disappears after 24 hours; Instagram’s Help Center says stories “disappear from your profile, Feed and messages after 24 hours, unless you add them to your profile as story highlights.”
A highlight stays until you remove it. In Instagram’s words, stories you add “remain visible as highlights until you remove them, even after the original story has disappeared.” Each highlight has a name and a cover photo you choose, and you can add, remove or rename its stories at any time.
Stories, the archive and highlights
Three places hold your stories, and each lasts a different length of time. From Instagram’s Help Center:

How to make a highlight
Instagram says to add story highlights in the Instagram app for Android, iPhone or iPad. Go to your profile and tap New; if you do not see New, tap Story highlight. Enter a name, tap Next, select the story or stories to include, tap Next again, then choose a cover photo and tap Done.
To add to a highlight you already have, open it, tap More, then Edit, and select more stories. The same Edit screen lets you rename the highlight and unselect stories to take them out. To remove one story, open it inside the highlight, tap Options, then Delete.
What the archive changes
Stories you share are saved to your Stories Archive, and highlights draw on what you have kept. You can archive a story before its 24 hours are up, and you can turn off Save story to archive in the archive’s settings. Instagram notes that “Stories Archive and Highlights aren’t available for all accounts.”
Instagram may change a story when it is saved to the archive, to keep up with storage: it gives “muting music or freezing videos or gifs” as examples, says the changes are permanent, and lists photo stories that use the music or gif stickers among those affected. If a highlight depends on a song or a moving sticker, check how it plays after the story has been archived.
What deleting removes
Deleting reaches further than it looks. From Instagram’s Help Center:

Because highlights sit under your bio, they work as the standing part of a profile that stories otherwise lack:
- Answers to the questions people ask most: prices, how to book, where you ship.
- Proof that lasts: reviews, results and press, gathered from stories as they happen.
- A short tour of what the account is for, so a new visitor knows what to expect before following.

No. Stories added to a highlight stay visible until you remove them, even after the original story has disappeared.

If I delete a story from my archive, does it leave my highlights?
