What is an Instagram professional account?

An Instagram professional account is a business or creator account with insights, ads and contact tools. Which type to pick, what changes, how to switch back.

The short answer

A professional account is an Instagram account switched from personal to Business or Creator. Instagram’s Help Center says it “gives you access to features to help you grow your account, monetize, create ads, understand your growth, and manage your messages.”

Instagram recommends Business accounts for retailers, local businesses, brands, organizations and service providers, and Creator accounts for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers. Either way, the account must be public, and you can switch type, or back to personal, at any time.

Business or creator

Both types sit under the same professional account. From Instagram’s Help Center:

What you get

What changes

Two things become fixed. A professional account cannot be private, and pending follow requests are accepted automatically when you switch, since the account goes public. And if you link a Facebook Page, you can share Instagram posts to Facebook only through that Page, not to another Page or your Facebook profile.

Switching back is in Settings: Account type and tools, Account type, Switch account type, then Switch to personal account. Instagram says you then lose access to some Meta business tools, such as Meta Business Suite and Ads Manager, though a public personal account keeps Your dashboard and its insights.

Why it matters for growth and tools

Most creator programs start from a professional account. Instagram’s Meta Creator Marketplace, where brands find creators for branded content, is available only to business and creator accounts, and is reached from the professional dashboard under Branded content. Outside tools work the same way: apps that schedule posts, read insights or answer messages connect to a professional account.

PostEase connects Instagram professional accounts, business or creator, to schedule posts, read their performance and answer comments and messages from one inbox. YouTube, X, LinkedIn (personal profile), Pinterest, Bluesky, and WordPress publishing are live today; Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Threads are pending each platform's own API approval.

Questions

What is the difference between an Instagram business and creator account?

Both are professional accounts. Instagram recommends Business for retailers, local businesses, brands and service providers, and Creator for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers. The professional dashboard shows creator tools, such as Subscriptions and the branded content tool, or business tools, such as ads, to match.

Can a professional Instagram account be private?

No. Professional accounts are public, and pending follow requests are accepted when you switch.

Is an Instagram professional account free?

Instagram’s Help Center describes switching as a setting you can change at any time and lists no fee for it. Running ads is paid separately.

Can I switch back to a personal account?

Yes, at any time, under Account type and tools. You lose access to some Meta business tools such as Meta Business Suite and Ads Manager.
