The short answer
A repost is Instagram’s built-in way to share someone else’s public reel or post with your followers, as their original reel or post rather than a copy. Instagram’s Help Center says that when you repost, “your followers may see that you reposted in their feeds, and reposts will appear in a dedicated repost tab on your profile.”
Meta launched reposts on August 6, 2025, saying they “will be recommended to your friends’ and followers’ feeds.” Instagram notes the feature may not be available to everyone.
How a repost works
From Instagram’s Help Center:
| Question | What Instagram says |
|---|---|
| What can be reposted | Public reels and posts, and only if the original creator allows reposts |
| Can you repost a repost? | No: only content posted by the original creator can be reposted |
| Who sees it | Your followers may see that you reposted it in their feeds |
| Where it lives | In a dedicated Reposts tab on your profile |
| Adding your own words | Tap the bubble by your profile picture, add text, and tap Save |
| Comments on your repost | They come to you as direct messages |
How to repost
On a public reel or post, tap Repost. To add a note, tap the bubble by your profile picture at the bottom left, type your text, and tap Save. Tapping Repost again on the same reel or post removes it.
To see or clean up past reposts, open the Reposts tab on your profile, or go to Menu, Your activity, then Reposts, where you can select several and delete them at once.
Controlling reposts of your work
Reposts are a setting the original creator controls. From Instagram’s Help Center:
| You want to | Where to do it |
|---|---|
| Stop others reposting your posts and reels | Menu, then Sharing and reuse under How others can interact with you, then the Reposts on posts and reels toggle |
| Remove one of your reposts | Tap Repost again on the reel or post |
| Delete several reposts at once | Menu, Your activity, Reposts, select, then Delete |
| Report a repost | Long-press the reposter’s profile picture at the bottom left, then Report |
Reposts and permission
A native repost is not the same as downloading someone’s video and uploading it to your account. A repost shares the original creator’s own reel or post, and only works if they allow reposts. Uploading a copy has none of that, and is where permission and copyright questions start.
Meta placed reposts alongside a Friends tab in Reels, where people see public reels their friends have created, liked, reposted or commented on. A repost from a follower can put your reel in front of their friends.
Using reposts as a creator
For a creator, reposts work in both directions:
- Keep reposts on for work you want to spread, and check that your setting allows them.
- Repost collaborators, customers or peers with a line of your own, which reaches your followers without copying their content.
- Use the Reposts tab as a short shelf of work you rate, since it sits on your profile.
