The short answer
The Instagram map is a map at the top of your Instagram messages. It does two separate things: it shows the location of friends who choose to share it with you, and it shows recent posts, reels and stories that people you follow have tagged with a location.
Meta launched it in the US on August 6, 2025, saying you can “opt in to sharing your last active location with friends you choose, and you can turn it off anytime.” It reached India on October 6, 2025, with changes to make clear when you are and are not sharing your location.
Two things on one map
Most confusion about the map comes from mixing these up. From Meta’s announcements and Instagram’s Help Center:
| Question | Your live location | Location-tagged content |
|---|---|---|
| On by default? | No, off until you opt in | Appears whenever you add a location tag |
| Who can see it | Only people you choose, who must follow you back | People who follow you; your profile privacy setting applies |
| How long | Updates when you open Instagram; disappears if you have not opened it in 24 hours | Reels, posts and stories for 24 hours after posting |
| How to stop it | Turn sharing off in map Settings, or hide places or people | Post without a location tag |
Sharing your location
Tap Messages, then Map at the top of your inbox, then Settings. Meta lists the choices as friends (followers you follow back), Close Friends, only selected friends, or no one. Instagram’s Help Center adds that you can hide your location in up to 3 places, and from specific accounts, and that teens can only share with adults they follow or other teens.
The map setting is separate from your phone’s location permission for Instagram: turning off map sharing does not turn off location services. Settings shows where you stand. From Instagram’s Help Center:
| You see | It means |
|---|---|
| A blue arrow | You are sharing your location with your selected audience |
| A red dot | You are not sharing your location |
| An orange triangle | You need to allow location permission on your device to share |
What a location tag does
Meta’s launch post says any content with a location tag can show up on the map, including “Reels, posts, and stories from people you follow, available for 24 hours after it’s posted,” and notes from people you mutually follow for 24 hours. Instagram’s Help Center also lists the map among the places a story with a tagged location appears for your followers.
Meta said in October 2025 that some people thought tagging a post meant sharing where they were. It removed profile photos from content on the map, added a reminder that a tagged story, reel or post will populate on the map, and added a preview of how the content will look there.
Using the map as a creator
A location tag now puts a post in one more place for a day, in front of followers who are browsing what is happening nearby. Meta describes people using the map to find “a new place to hang out from a local creator’s reel.” For a local business or a creator covering places, that is a reason to tag the location on posts made on site, and a reason to leave the tag off anything posted from home.
Questions
Does the Instagram map show my location automatically?
No. Location sharing on the map is off until you opt in, and you choose who sees it.
Does tagging a location on a post share where I am?
No. A tagged post shows up on the map for your followers for 24 hours, but it is not your live location. Meta removed profile photos from content on the map to make that clearer.
Who can I share my location with on the Instagram map?
Friends who follow you back, Close Friends, only selected friends, or no one. Instagram says you can only share with accounts that follow you back.
Where is the Instagram map?
At the top of your messages inbox: tap Messages, then Map.
