The short answer
A Pinterest board is a named collection of Pins, the way a folder holds files. Every Pin you publish or save goes on a board, and the board’s name tells people, and Pinterest, what the Pins on it are about.
Pinterest’s own definition is short: “Boards are collections for your Pins. Make a board anytime or as you save a Pin.” A board can be public, private, or shared with collaborators as a group board.
Kinds of board, in Pinterest’s words
From Pinterest’s Help Center:
| Kind | What Pinterest says |
|---|---|
| Board | Boards are collections for your Pins. |
| Private board | When you save Pins to a private board, the person you saved from will not get a notification and the Pin’s count will not increase. |
| Group board | Group boards are a great way to share ideas and plans. |
| Who decides on a group board | As the owner of a group board, you decide what your collaborators can do on your board. |
Planning boards for a business
A business or creator account works best with boards planned the way a shop plans its aisles:
| Approach | Example boards | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| By topic people search | Small kitchen ideas, Weeknight dinners | Reaching people who do not know you yet |
| By product or service | Ceramic mugs, Wedding florals | Shops and service businesses |
| By season or event | Holiday gifts, Back to school | Planning content ahead of the season |
| By content type | Our blog, Video tutorials | Sending people to your site |
Naming a board
Board names work like search terms, so a few habits help:
- Use the words people type into Pinterest, not a clever name only you understand.
- Keep each board to one topic, so every Pin on it supports the same search.
- Write a short board description in the same plain words.
- Keep the boards you are still building private until they have enough Pins to be worth following.
Boards and scheduling
A scheduled Pin is published to a board, just as one made in the app is: Pinterest’s API describes the board field as “The board to which this Pin belongs.” So before a Pin is scheduled, the account needs at least one board.
In PostEase you choose the board for each Pin in the composer when you schedule it; if you leave it unset, the Pin goes to the account’s first board. If the connected account has no boards yet, PostEase says so and asks you to create one on Pinterest first.
Questions
Can other people see my Pinterest boards?
Public boards, yes. Private boards are visible only to you and anyone you invite, and saving to one sends no notification and does not add to the Pin’s count, according to Pinterest.
What is a group board on Pinterest?
A board you share with collaborators, who can add Pins to it. The owner decides what collaborators can do, from adding Pins to almost everything.
How many boards should a business have?
Enough to cover the topics your customers search, each kept to one topic. A handful of focused boards beats many thin ones.
Do I need a board to schedule a Pin?
Yes. Every Pin belongs to a board, so the account needs at least one before a Pin can be scheduled to it.
