The short answer
A repost shares someone else’s post with your own followers while keeping it theirs: the original post, with the original creator’s name, shown to your audience. X describes a Repost as “a post that you share publicly with your followers,” and Instagram says its reposts can appear in your followers’ feeds and in a Reposts tab on your profile.
A quote post is a repost with your own words added. X, Threads and Bluesky have both reposts and quote posts; Instagram and TikTok let you add a short note to a repost. For a creator, reposts are how a post travels past its first audience, which is why each platform gives the original creator some control.
Reposts on each platform
From each platform’s help pages and announcements:
| Platform | How it works | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Tap Repost on a public reel or post; it can reach followers’ feeds and sits in a Reposts tab | Launched August 2025; creators can turn off others reposting their content | |
| TikTok | Share, then Repost; reposts show in followers’ For You feeds, labelled with your name and photo | Reposts sit in a Repost tab on your profile; removing one deletes its replies |
| X | The Repost icon shares a post with all your followers; Quote adds your comment | You can undo a Repost; X may prompt you to read an article before reposting it |
| Threads | You can repost or quote a thread | Reposts and quotes during an edit mark the post as edited |
| Bluesky | Repost or quote post | You can see every quote of your post and detach your post from one |
TikTok reposts in detail
TikTok’s Help Center says reposted content appears in the For You feed like any post, labelled as a repost with the reposter’s photo and name. On a public account your reposts, repost text and replies to them are visible on your profile, and TikTok notes that your comment privacy settings don’t apply to repost replies; on a private account only your followers see them. To undo one, tap Share, then Delete repost.
Controls for the original creator
Each platform gives the person who posted first some say:
| Platform | Control |
|---|---|
| A Sharing and reuse setting decides whether others can repost your content | |
| Bluesky | Detach your post from a quote post; Bluesky notes these removals are public data |
| Bluesky | Notifications when someone likes or reposts a post you reposted, with separate settings for quotes and reposts |
| X | Undoing your own Repost removes it from timelines, though cached copies may linger |
Reposts as a strategy
A few habits follow from how reposts work:
- Write posts people want to pass on: a clear takeaway travels further than an announcement.
- Repost your own older posts when they are relevant again, which X’s help explicitly suggests.
- Quote instead of repost when you have something to add; your comment is what your followers see first.
- Credit is built in, so a repost is the safe way to share someone else’s work, unlike downloading and re-uploading it.
Questions
What is the difference between a repost and a quote post?
A repost shares the original post as it is. A quote post shares it with your own comment added. X, Threads and Bluesky offer both.
Can you undo a repost?
Yes. On X, tap the highlighted Repost icon and choose Undo Repost; on TikTok, tap Share, then Delete repost; on Instagram, tap Repost again.
Can I stop people reposting my posts?
On Instagram, the Sharing and reuse setting controls whether others can repost your content. On Bluesky, you can detach your post from someone’s quote post.
