The short answer
Add Yours is a prompt you put on a post that invites other people to answer it with a post of their own. Instagram’s Help Center says the sticker “allows you to interact with others on Instagram by writing or responding to a prompt,” on stories and reels; TikTok offers the same idea, which it calls Add Yours, on photos and videos.
On Instagram, each answer carries a “Started by” credit showing who began the prompt, so a prompt others take up puts your name in front of their viewers.
Instagram and TikTok side by side
From each platform’s help pages:
| Question | TikTok | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it goes | Stories and reels | Photo and video posts |
| How to add it | Stickers, then Add Yours; write a prompt or pick a suggested one | Add Yours on the editing screen, or Stickers, then Add Yours |
| Who can answer | Anyone who sees it; answers show to their own audience | Anyone on TikTok; prompts are visible to everyone |
| Credit | A “Started by” credit, which you can hide | Not described on TikTok’s help page |
| Notifications | When someone adds to your prompt, unless turned off | Inbox notifications when someone responds |
| Removing it | Delete the story or reel | The button can’t be removed after posting; change privacy or delete the post |
Instagram’s Add Yours Template
Instagram also has an Add Yours Template sticker for stories. It pins GIFs, text or images to the prompt, so everyone who uses your template starts from the same layout and adds their own photo. People can find trending templates in the Templates browser, under Trending or International hits. Instagram notes template stories may be shared to Facebook, and deleting a template removes it from both apps.
Privacy and credit
Answers follow each person’s own settings. A few rules from the help pages:
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Your account is private (Instagram) | Only your followers see what you added, and people who don’t follow you can’t see you started a prompt |
| You shared to Close Friends (Instagram) | People outside the list can’t see you started it |
| You answer a prompt (TikTok) | You can change your post’s privacy if you don’t want everyone to see it |
| A popular topic (TikTok) | TikTok may add an Add Yours button to your post, and tells you when it does |
Using it well
Because answers spread a prompt to other people’s audiences, it is worth writing carefully:
- Ask for something anyone can show in one photo or a few seconds: a desk, a first attempt, a favourite tool.
- Answer your own prompt first, so people see what you mean.
- Join prompts in your niche, which puts your post on a page people are already browsing.
- Keep a prompt free of anything you would not want reposted widely; on TikTok the button stays once posted.
Questions
How do you add the Add Yours sticker on Instagram?
When creating a story or reel, tap Stickers at the top, choose Add Yours, write a prompt or pick a suggested one, then tap Done.
Can you remove Add Yours from a TikTok after posting?
No. TikTok says the Add Yours button can’t be deleted from a published post; you can change the post’s privacy or delete it.
Can I hide that I started an Add Yours prompt?
On Instagram, yes: use Options on your story or reel to hide your username from the “Started by” credit.
