What is cross-posting?

Publishing the same post to more than one platform. The built-in options in Instagram and Threads, where a copy falls short, and how to adapt one post for each.

The short answer

Cross-posting is publishing the same post to more than one platform, either by hand or with a setting or tool that copies it for you. Some platforms build it in: Instagram can share every post to Facebook automatically, and a Threads post can be shared to Instagram as a Story.

It saves time, but an exact copy rarely fits every platform. Each one has its own text limit, picture shape and audience, so the strongest cross-posting starts from one idea and adapts the caption, length and shape for each place it goes.

Cross-posting the platforms build in

Two Meta apps copy posts between themselves, each from its own settings, as described in Meta’s help and developer documentation:

ThreadsInstagram StoriesA Threads post is shared to a linked Instagram account as a Story, which expires after 24 hours

Where an exact copy falls short

The same words and file meet different limits on each platform. A caption that fits Instagram can be cut off on X or Bluesky, and a picture shaped for one feed is cropped in another:

Text limits by platform, from each platform’s own documentation, as set out in this blog’s specs posts
PlatformText limit
X280 characters
Bluesky300 characters
Threads500 characters
Instagram2,200 characters
TikTok2,200 characters
LinkedIn3,000 characters

How to cross-post well

Start from one idea, then fit it to each place:

  • Write the longest version first, then cut it down for X, Bluesky and Threads.
  • Make the picture or video in each platform’s shape: vertical 9:16 for Reels and TikTok, 4:5 for feeds, 2:3 for Pinterest.
  • Change the call to action: where a post cannot carry a clickable link, point people to the link in your bio instead.
  • Stagger the times, so each platform gets the post when its own audience is reading.
  • Reply on each platform, since the comments arrive separately.

Cross-posting with a scheduler

A scheduler does the copying across every platform, not only between two Meta apps. In PostEase, one post goes to every channel you pick, with a preview for each platform, and each copy is checked against that platform’s limits before it goes out. Comments from every channel then arrive in one inbox.

Questions

Is cross-posting bad for reach?

Platforms rank posts on how people respond to them, so the risk is a copy that does not fit: a cut-off caption or a cropped picture. Adapting each copy to its platform avoids that.

Can Instagram post to Facebook automatically?

Yes. In Accounts Center, a setting shares every future Instagram post to Facebook, set up from the Instagram app on Android or iPhone, according to Meta’s help.

Can I share a Threads post to Instagram?

Yes, as a Story on a linked Instagram account. Like any Story, it expires after 24 hours.

What is the difference between cross-posting and repurposing?

Cross-posting sends the same post to several platforms. Repurposing turns one piece, such as a video, into new posts made for each platform: clips, quotes, carousels.
