What is fediverse sharing on Threads?

Fediverse sharing sends your Threads posts to other servers such as Mastodon, where people can follow and reply. Who can turn it on and what is shared.

The short answer

Fediverse sharing is a Threads setting that publishes your profile and posts to the fediverse, the network of independent servers such as Mastodon. People there can find and follow you, see your posts and reply, without a Threads account. Meta calls the fediverse “an open global network of interconnected, but still independent, social media servers, each with its own users, content and rules.”

With sharing on, Threads also shows you followers and likes from other servers, and since June 2025 a dedicated feed of posts from fediverse accounts you follow, plus search for fediverse profiles inside Threads.

Who can turn it on

Instagram’s Help Center, which covers Threads, lists the conditions:

Who can use fediverse sharing on Threads, from Instagram’s Help Center, checked October 2026
ConditionWhat Meta requires
AccountA Threads profile created with an Instagram account
Age18 or older
ProfilePublic
LocationOutside the European Region

What is shared, and what is not

Once sharing is on, future posts go to other servers automatically, with exceptions:

ContentShared to the fediverse?
Your new postsYes, including posts made through the Threads API
Posts with unsupported attachmentsNo; Threads warns you while drafting
Posts where you limit who can quote or replyNo
Your repliesOnly if the original post’s author also shares to the fediverse

What you cannot take back

The privacy page is frank about the trade. Content shared to other servers is “no longer in Meta’s control” and follows those servers’ rules. If you delete or archive a post, turn sharing off, or make your profile private, Meta asks other servers to delete your content, but says: “We cannot guarantee that they will delete your post and it may remain publicly visible.”

Switching your profile to private turns sharing off automatically. Treat anything posted with sharing on as public beyond Threads, in the way a public website is.

Turning it on

In Threads, go to your profile, open the menu, tap Account, then Fediverse sharing, read the prompts, and tap Turn on sharing. A Fediverse Sharing label appears on your profile, where tapping it shows your fediverse username, and shared posts carry the same label.

Fediverse sharing and PostEase

Meta’s Help Center says posts made through the Threads API are shared to the fediverse like any other when the setting is on, so the setting applies to scheduled posts too. YouTube, X, LinkedIn (personal profile), Pinterest, Bluesky, and WordPress publishing are live today; Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Threads are pending each platform's own API approval.

Questions

Can Mastodon users follow me on Threads?

Yes, if you turn on fediverse sharing. People on other servers can then search for, follow and reply to your Threads profile.

Is fediverse sharing available in the EU?

No. Meta lists it as available to users outside the European Region.

If I delete a Threads post, is it deleted on the fediverse?

Meta asks other servers to delete it, but says it cannot guarantee they will, so it may stay visible.

Are scheduled Threads posts shared to the fediverse?

Yes. Meta says sharing includes posts made through the Threads API, which scheduling tools use.
