The short answer
The Commercial Music Library, or CML, is TikTok’s music for businesses. TikTok’s Business Help Center describes it as “a pre-cleared global music library of 1 million songs,” covering all styles, genres and regions, from independent artists to large music houses, and free for businesses to use.
The reason it exists is licensing. TikTok says businesses “cannot use the general music library for commercial usage,” and that the licenses it holds for music outside the CML do not cover commercial use. So a brand’s organic posts, its ads and branded content made for it should use CML sounds, which TikTok calls Commercial Sounds.
Which sounds you see
Your account type decides what Add Sound shows. From TikTok’s Business Help Center:
| Account type | What Add Sound shows | To reach the CML |
|---|---|---|
| Business Account | Only sounds from the Commercial Music Library | Already shown |
| Personal account | All sounds | Tap Sounds, then choose Commercial Sounds from the dropdown |
When TikTok says to use it
TikTok lists these uses for the CML, and adds rules for posts that promote something:
| Situation | What TikTok says |
|---|---|
| A business’s organic posts, including duets and stitches | Use the Commercial Music Library |
| Video ads | Use the Commercial Music Library |
| Branded content | Use the Commercial Music Library |
| A creator promoting a brand, product or service | TikTok recommends only CML music, as it is pre-cleared |
| Using music from outside the CML in such a post | Agree to the Music Usage Confirmation, shown when the content disclosure setting is on, confirming you hold all licenses |
| Original sounds from other users or other licensed sounds | TikTok tells businesses to check they have a proper license |
Finding a track
In the web version, TikTok says to choose the region where a campaign will run, so you see music available there, then browse all music or playlists, filter by usable placements, theme, genre, mood and duration, or search. Up to 10,000 Commercial Sounds can be shown at once, so filters do most of the work. Chosen sounds can be used in organic or paid content.
Why it matters for creators and brands
TikTok’s licenses for songs in the general library do not cover a brand’s promotion. For a business account, TikTok has already narrowed the choice to the CML. For a creator making a sponsored post, the music choice is part of the deal: pick a Commercial Sound, or be ready to confirm you have the license. Our entry on TikTok’s content disclosure setting covers the label that goes with the post.
