Who can see your TikTok posts? Privacy settings explained

Everyone, Friends, Followers or Only you: what each TikTok post setting means, how a private account changes them, and how to change a post later.

The short answer

Each TikTok post has its own audience, set when you post and changeable later. TikTok’s Help Center says a public account can choose Everyone (people on or off TikTok), Friends (followers you follow back) or Only you, and a private account can choose Followers, Friends or Only you. Your account setting decides who can follow you and see your profile; the post setting narrows who sees each post.

To change a post after it is up, go to it from your profile, tap More options, then Privacy settings, and choose again. TikTok notes that the view count does not reset when you do.

The four audiences

Private account or public account

TikTok’s Help Center page on choosing between a private or public account sets out what changes. With a private account, you approve who can watch your videos, LIVE videos, bio and likes, and see your followers and following lists, and people cannot Duet, Stitch, create stickers with, download or add your posts to their Stories. With a public account, anyone can watch and see those lists, and your content may appear in search engines, blogs, social media posts and news sites.

Some things stay visible either way. TikTok says your name, username and profile photo are always visible to anyone on or off TikTok, and other people can search for your account. To switch, tap Profile, the Menu button, Settings and privacy, then Privacy, and turn Private account on or off.

Setting it on a new post, and changing it later

For a new post, TikTok’s Help Center says to tap the Settings button at the top of the preview screen and choose who can view it; for video and photo posts you can also set it from the Post screen. For an existing post, tap Profile, open the post, tap More options on the side, then Privacy settings at the bottom (you may need to swipe left), and choose again.

TikTok also says that, depending on your age and location, your post privacy may be set to Only you by default and cannot be changed until you reach a certain age. If the choice is missing on a teen account, that is why.

Who can add your posts to their Story

A separate setting controls reuse. TikTok says your account must be public to manage who can add your posts to their Story, under Settings and privacy, then Allow reuse of content from, and that the same setting affects who can Stitch, Duet and create stickers with your posts. A post set to Everyone is not automatically open to reuse; that is chosen here.

Why a scheduled TikTok post can come out as Only you

TikTok’s content sharing guidelines for its Content Posting API say an app that has not passed TikTok’s audit can post only as Only you, and that the account owner must then change each post to Everyone by hand. They also say an approved app must let you choose the audience from the options TikTok returns for your account, with no default, and that branded content cannot be private.

So if a post from a third-party tool lands as Only you, check whether that tool has passed TikTok’s review, and change the post as above. Nothing you post later is affected by that one post’s setting.

How PostEase handles it

PostEase’s composer asks who can see each TikTok post, from the audiences TikTok offers for that account, with nothing chosen for you, and asks separately whether to allow comments, Duet and Stitch. Posts that arrive without that choice, through the CSV import, the API or a recycled post, go out as Only you, so change them in TikTok if they should be public. YouTube, X, LinkedIn (personal profile), Pinterest, Bluesky, WordPress, and TikTok publishing are live today; Instagram, Facebook, and Threads are pending each platform's own API approval.

Questions

What does Friends mean on TikTok?

TikTok’s Help Center defines Friends as followers you follow back. A post set to Friends is seen only by them.

Can I make a TikTok public after posting it as Only you?

Yes. Open the post from your profile, tap More options, then Privacy settings, and choose Everyone (or Followers on a private account). TikTok says the view count does not reset.

If my account is private, can I still post something to everyone?

No. TikTok’s Help Center lists Followers, Friends and Only you for private accounts; Everyone is offered on public accounts.

Why can’t I change who sees my TikTok posts?

TikTok says that, depending on your age and location, post privacy may be set to Only you by default and cannot be changed until you reach a certain age.
