The short answer
A long video usually holds several short ones: a strong answer, a surprising moment, a clear tip. To turn it into clips, pick those moments, cut each to stand alone, reframe it vertical, add captions, and post each as its own Short, Reel or TikTok. Platforms now do part of this for you: YouTube Studio cuts Shorts from your own long videos, and TikTok’s Smart Split cuts a long video into several short ones automatically.
YouTube is explicit that this is allowed: “You won’t be penalized for using your content in a video clip or Short.”
The tools compared
What each platform’s own tool does, from its documentation:
| What differs | YouTube Studio clips and Shorts | TikTok Smart Split |
|---|---|---|
| Source video | A long-form video already on your channel | A file you upload, up to 60 minutes and 30 GB |
| How moments are chosen | You pick from the transcript or timeline, or take AI suggestions where available | Automatically, with clip length set to Auto or a length you choose |
| Vertical framing | Shorts preview with a blurred crop where the frame does not fill | Optional automatic crop of horizontal video to vertical |
| Captions | Auto-captions from the transcript, restylable | A choice of auto-caption formats |
| Limits | AI suggestions in select countries and languages | Creators with 1,000+ followers; 150 minutes of conversion a month |
Choosing the moments
Automatic tools find candidates; the choice of what stands alone is still yours:
- Look for a moment that makes sense without the rest of the video: a full answer, a before and after, a single tip.
- Start the clip on the most interesting line, not on the setup before it.
- Cut each clip as short as its idea allows; a clip people finish beats a longer one they leave.
- Check the frame after reframing: a vertical crop of a wide shot can cut out the person speaking.
- Write a caption and title for each clip as a post in its own right, not as a pointer to the full video.
A Short or a video clip
YouTube’s tool makes two kinds of output from the same long video:
| What differs | Short | Video clip |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Vertical, shown with a blurred crop where the frame does not fill | Keeps the source video’s shape |
| Captions | Auto-captions from the transcript, where available | Not added by the tool |
| Extras | Customisable caption colour, font, style and position | An optional intro or outro from another eligible video |
| Link to the original | Added automatically as the related video, unless the Short is private, unlisted or made for kids | YouTube suggests linking the source in the description |
| Where it lands | Content, then Shorts | Content, then Videos |
Doing it in PostEase
PostEase Studio is a video editor in the browser that works from what is said: it writes captions from your speech, lets you cut by words in the transcript, and exports in every shape, from 9:16 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok to square and 4:5. Each clip then goes straight onto your calendar, scheduled to every platform you have connected. YouTube, X, LinkedIn (personal profile), Pinterest, Bluesky, and WordPress publishing are live today; Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Threads are pending each platform's own API approval.
Questions
Will YouTube penalise Shorts cut from my own videos?
No. YouTube says you won’t be penalized for using your content in a video clip or Short.
How do I make a Short from a YouTube video?
In YouTube Studio, open the video, choose Clips and Shorts, then Create clip or Short, and pick Short. Select the segment from the transcript or timeline, preview it, and create a draft.
What is TikTok Smart Split?
A TikTok Studio Web tool that cuts a long video into several short ones, with captions and optional vertical cropping, for creators with 1,000 or more followers.
How long should a clip be?
As long as its idea and no longer. YouTube Shorts go up to 3 minutes, but a clip people finish does better than one they leave.
