What is a LinkedIn Event?

A LinkedIn Event is a page for an online or in-person event that people attend. Who can create one, the 1,000-a-week invite limit, reminders and live streams.

The short answer

A LinkedIn Event is an event listing on LinkedIn that people can attend, organized by a member’s profile or by a LinkedIn Page. LinkedIn’s Help Center says Page admins “can use LinkedIn Events to bring their professional community together safely and in real-time.” An event is online or in person, and an online one is either streamed with LinkedIn Live or linked to an outside event.

Attending is what makes an event useful to its organizer. People who click attend get reminders before it starts, and, for a live stream, a notification when it begins. LinkedIn says followers of a member or Page no longer get a notification when a stream starts, so the attendee list is the audience you can reach on the day.

What an event is made of

LinkedIn fixes three choices when an event is posted:

SettingOptionsCan it change later?
OrganizerYour profile, or a Page you are a super or content admin ofNo
Event typeOnline or In personNo
Event formatLinkedIn Live, or an External event linkNo

Events organized by a Page

Any super or content admin of a Page can create an event for it, and LinkedIn says Pages for a company, organization, school or university can organize events. Every super or content admin can then edit, cancel or delete it and remove attendees, even if they are not attending; attendees cannot see which members are the Page’s admins. To hand hosting to someone else, make them a super or content admin. Events are managed from the Manage section of the Page’s admin view, and LinkedIn offers a built-in test event to check a live stream setup without broadcasting, instead of a test Page.

Invitations and reminders

From LinkedIn’s FAQ for Page events, which says the notifications are the same for events organized by individual profiles:

WhatHow it works
Who you can inviteOnly your 1st-degree connections; attendees can invite their own connections
Page followersCannot be invited unless connected to one of the Page’s admins; share the event on the Page instead, and you can promote that post
Invitation limitUp to 1,000 a week per Page admin, across all events
RemindersSeven days, three days and 15 minutes before the start
ChangesAttendees are notified when the day, time or venue changes, or the event is cancelled
Going livePeople who clicked attend or register are notified when the stream starts, if their notifications are on; followers are not

LinkedIn Live as the format

Choosing LinkedIn Live as the format means the event streams on LinkedIn, which needs access: LinkedIn checks its criteria when you create the event, and the option appears in the Event format dropdown only if you qualify. During the stream, viewers react, like and comment, and LinkedIn notes that links posted in comments show as plain text and cannot be clicked. People find live events on the Events home page, in the feed and through notifications.

Filling an event

Because notifications reach attendees and not followers, the work is getting people to click attend:

  • Create the event well ahead, so the seven-day reminder has time to go out.
  • Spread invitations across the week, since each admin sends at most 1,000.
  • Post the event URL on your Page and profile, so followers can attend.
  • Put any link you want people to open in the event details, not in live comments.

Questions

How many people can I invite to a LinkedIn Event?

Each Page admin can send up to 1,000 invitations a week, and the limit is shared across all events. You can invite only your 1st-degree connections.

Can I invite my LinkedIn Page’s followers to an event?

Not directly, unless they are connected to one of the Page’s admins. Share the event on the Page so followers see it, and promote that post if you want more reach.

When does LinkedIn send event reminders?

Seven days, three days and 15 minutes before the event starts, to people attending. Attendees are also told about changes to the time, venue or a cancellation.

Can I change a LinkedIn Event from in person to online?

No. The organizer, event type (online or in person) and format (LinkedIn Live or an external link) cannot be changed after the event is posted.
