The short answer
A Pin is the basic post on Pinterest: one image or one video, with a title, a description and, optionally, a link to somewhere people can learn more. Pinterest’s Help Center says you create Pins “by uploading images or videos from your computer, tablet or mobile device,” and you can save Pins you find, yours or other people’s, to your boards.
A Pin’s link and its description are what set it apart from a post on most other networks. The link sends people off Pinterest to your site, and Pinterest says the description, which does not show in the home feed, is used by its algorithm to decide who sees the Pin.
The parts of a Pin
From Pinterest’s Help Center, what you fill in when you create a Pin:
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
| Title | Up to 100 characters |
| Description | Up to 800 characters; not shown in the home or search feed, but used by Pinterest’s algorithm to judge relevance |
| Link | Optional; gives people a place to learn more |
| Board | Where the Pin is saved; choose one or create a new board |
| Related topics | Up to 10, to help people searching for similar ideas find the Pin |
| Cover | For a video Pin, the thumbnail you choose with Edit cover |
| AI-modified toggles | Mark content made completely or partly with AI, or that includes an AI-generated person |
| Advanced settings | Turn comments and shopping recommendations on or off |
Pin specs
Pinterest publishes these limits for organic image and video Pins:
| Spec | Image Pin | Video Pin |
|---|---|---|
| File types | BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WEBP | MP4 or M4V on the web; MP4, MOV or M4V in the apps |
| Size or length | Up to 20 MB on the web | 4 seconds to 5 minutes, H.264 or H.265 |
| Shape | Not specified | 9:16 (1080 x 1920) recommended for full screen; also 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5 or 1:1 |
| Safe zone | Keep text 270 px from the top, 65 px from the left, 195 px from the right and 790 px from the bottom | The same |
| Text box | Up to 250 characters | Up to 250 characters |
Drafts, scheduling and editing
On the web you can upload up to 10 images or 10 videos at a time, and each becomes its own Pin; to combine images and videos in one video Pin, Pinterest says to use the app. A business account can choose Publish at a later date and schedule a Pin up to 30 days ahead.
Drafts expire 30 days after you first save them, and a draft started on one device has to be finished there. On a desktop you can keep up to 50 drafts and publish them together.
After publishing, you can edit a Pin’s title, description, link, board and comment settings, depending on how it was made. You cannot change the image, video or audio; Pinterest says to create a new Pin instead. Deleted Pins cannot be recovered.
Writing a Pin that gets found
Because Pinterest reads the description and topics to place a Pin, a few habits follow from its own guidance:
- Write the description for search: say what the Pin shows and who it is for, in the words people would type.
- Add the related topics that match, up to 10.
- Keep text inside the safe zone so it is not covered on any device.
- Link to the exact page the Pin is about, not your home page.
Pins in PostEase
In PostEase a Pin is scheduled from the same composer as every other post: the image or video, your caption as the Pin’s description, and the board you choose. It sits on the calendar beside your posts for the other platforms.
