The short answer
A Pinterest business account is an account type for businesses, marketers and creators who post on Pinterest to be found. Pinterest’s Help Center describes it as free and says it gives you “access to analytics on your Pins and the ability to run ads,” along with the Pinterest Business Hub.
Pinterest says personal and business accounts are similar, but business accounts add features for business owners and marketers. You can create a new business account or convert a personal one; converting keeps your Pins and followers, and business accounts are public.
Personal or business
From Pinterest’s Help Center:
| Feature | Personal account | Business account |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | Free |
| Visibility | Public or private | Public |
| Pinterest Analytics | Not listed | Included |
| Ads | Not listed | Run ads |
| Schedule a Pin when creating it | Not listed | Publish at a later date, up to 30 days ahead |
| Business Hub | Not listed | Included |
Two ways to get one
To create a new business account, sign up with an email that is not already used on a Pinterest account, then fill in your profile, describe your business and say whether you want to run ads. Pinterest suggests that employees and agencies creating an account for a company use their professional email and their own name, so the owner can tell who has access.
To convert a personal account, go to Settings, then Account management, find Convert to a business account and click Convert account, then complete the same steps. Pinterest notes that if your personal account is linked to another Pinterest account you need to unlink it first, and that personal accounts can no longer be linked to business accounts.
What analytics shows
Pinterest Analytics opens on an Overview of the last 30 days, with overall performance, performance over time, top boards and top Pins. Some of the metrics Pinterest defines:
| Metric | Pinterest’s definition |
|---|---|
| Impressions | The number of times your Pins or ads were on screen |
| Saves | The number of times people saved your Pin to a board |
| Engagements | Saves, Pin clicks, outbound clicks, carousel card swipes and collections clicks |
| Engagement rate | Total engagements divided by the number of times your Pins were seen |
Claim your website too
A business account pairs with a claimed website. Pinterest recommends a business account for it, though it is not required. Once a site is claimed, Pins saved from it show your profile picture, link to your Pinterest profile and offer a follow button, and you get insight into how often your content is shared. You claim a site you own and can edit by adding an HTML tag or file, a DNS TXT record, or, for some accounts, by connecting Google Merchant Center. Each website can be claimed by one Pinterest account, and Pinterest says most marketplace shops, such as on Etsy, eBay and Amazon, cannot be claimed.
